Little Things

every time i have a short something to blog about i just add it to this post. it's a couple months old and getting long so i guess i'll un-draft it now. :)

once, i was humbled by a lab assistant. he told me he was going into the nursing program but before he was in the military he was planning to be an engineer. he took a lot of higher math classes. i need to take calc 1 and 2 for a BS in microbiology and said that math is hard. an mlt chimed in and said, how do you even use calculus?! it's not applicable in the real world! but the lab assistant said, "you do use it. calculus is everywhere but you just don't think about it." :) that is so zen. next time i have to do math i'm going to think about that statement.

while filling out a health examination form, there was a section that asked if i had been exposed to dangerous substances. i kind of chuckled and wondered how many people had to check the "yes" box. glacial acetic acid, ethidium bromide, phenol, chloroform, and live tuberculosis... i feel like superwoman! i survived! but it's not something to be taken lightly, i guess. people can die from bad reactions. i would not be laughing if it was P32 or something else radioactive.

i just read an article from the discover magazine that schizophrenia might be linked to a virus. hmm hmm hmmm... can you see where this is going? what are the symptoms of schizophrenia? can't tell what's real or not. can't control/lack of emotions. erratic behavior. delusions. paranoia. hallucinations. catatonic behavior. does this sound familliar?! does it sound like zombies?! i think so!! i thought zombie apocalypse was a flight of fantasy. but after finding out about the schizophrenia-virus link (the article had nothing to do with zombies, it is a scientific account that is interesting on its own; it observes that many patients were cmv positive and you do NOT have to be genetically predisposed.) i am suddenly seeing zombie apocalypse as a real and possible thing. also, i am sure you know of my robot obsession. yes, i am still worried about robots but i foresee a zombie apocalypse much MUCH sooner than robots turning on humans. we haven't really perfected the AI part of it yet (although things like robots that feed itself or biocell batteries are very real, very ingenious, and hella scary in robot attack context) but viruses, bacteria- everything made by nature- is capable of mutating on its own. hope you have your crowbars and shotguns ready.

there's a street in moili'ili near the restaurant camellia... no, actually closer to a japanese restaurant called minato... and it's called algaroba. i used to think of it as algebra street. but i've just realized that the kiawe tree is called algaroba. and i'm reading an interview of a japanese man who grew up there during the war time (near the hongwanji temple) and he is mentioning kiawe trees. there must have been a lot of them there. he is also mentioning about the blind fish in a pond under king street and chinese taro patches. i really enjoy this type of history. it's applicable because i know where these things are but it's so different from any other history i've learned. so much of my history education is based on early early hawaii history or only major events in american history (ie: at this point only things being mentioned are great depression, wpa, dust bowl, the wartime). not much culture- relevant culture- was ever taught to me. you can really learn a lot from older people. they provide an interesting perspective never taught in a class or a text book.

two of my favorite chef quotes:
"inside every great chef is a little chinese man"
-anthony bourdain

"the only things a chinese chef needs to rule his kitchen: cleaver, chopsticks, and wok."
- KW

i went to funeral on saturday. while waiting for the ceremony, i saw a LLAMA being trucked in. for someone else's funeral, obviously. I AM SO CURIOUS. who the FFFFF brings a llama to their funeral? i am intrigued. maybe it was a pet llama? a llama. a white llama. DO WANT! and since we are on the subject of funerals, i think in my life time i've been to 8 or 9 of them. interesting and different experience each time.

the best perk about my new job is the cafeteria brews starbucks in their coffee machine. and i can get a cup of it steaming hot at any hour of the day. and it only costs 99¢. <3!!! i may never leave...

Neo Violence by The Tough Alliance

went to HMC West today for more work orientation stuff today.
met some other new hires whom i hope i see again in the future.
caught the bus home- takes the same amount of time to get home on the E from ewa as it takes to take the 3 from KCC. sad sad sad.

yesterday ate shabu shabu and played gears of war 2. :)
also did more insanity. it's getting easier (but no less tiring.)

ahhhhg... summer break is really REALLY starting to boil down.
tomorrow straub stuff.
saturday campy stuff.
sunday tweeball.
and then monday work + school = end of my life.

and i'm super not ready for board exams.
i was ready for the final but not the boards. ahhhh...
ok, going to go study now. lorianne just asked me a question about ketones... i know you can find it by the acetest (acetone) and it changes to a purple color and it detects kidney problems. but that's about it. T____T

$18 mascara > $3 mascara
the color payoff on the cheap one from longs is fail...
maybe i will buy the tokidoki blue mascara online and then return the even more expensive one?

one more song for the road:

just found this shirt i haven't worn in a year.
makes me happi!

after nearly 8 years of not exercising, i started doing Insanity.
it's day two. mentally, it feels great. so accomplished!
physically, i'm scared if i lie down i might not be able to stand up... my upper back, obliques and thighs are really angry with me. 8|
if anyone wants to do insanity with me, let me know! good laughs to be had because i look sooper stoopid doing it!

only 15 more days until board exams. time to get back to study mode! vacation has been waaaaay too much fun. i kinda don't want to go back to school next week. :P

#30797 - A peek at the insane lightbulb clusters...

OMG. i had a dream about a place that looked like this.
in my dream it was also located in a tree house and had several floors and rooms made of wood.
but the whole ceiling was covered with light bulbs in a wave pattern.

iWANT -- specialty playing cards

i've just discovered the website THEORY 11 featuring magic tricks and artisan playing cards. i am in looooooove!
i have several "special" decks (all black [black tiger], reversed suit colors, etc. i don't mean trick decks or cheat decks, although i may or may not have some of these...) and would love to get my hands on some of these decks too! i really like the imagery of card decks (fronts AND backs!!) and it's a great parlor trick to pull out my "special" decks to play with.
the bicycle 125 deck is super sweet and the white back centurions (sold out) are classy looking, too. propaganda deck is edgy looking. smoke and mirrors v.4 (sold out) looks kind of art deco (ace of spades is sweet!).
i've always wanted to print my own deck... but so much work! and these are so nice...
O w O

bonus: ultra cool site design, check it out!

unrelated content:
other parlor tricks i keep on file: balancing a salt shaker on it's edge using salt (this is hard to describe but it's all due to the lovely crystal lattice structure of salt grains), cutting a deck of cards with one hand, quick rubber band patterns (also hard to describe).

the missing rolls

last night i dreamt that i was developing film (but not in the dark!) and then i took it out of the can before it was fixed and looked at it under a microscope! the pics were old- from the 1950s that were never developed before. i had to leave so i left the building

(i dream about the same fictional places- in this dream i was back at "the school" where there is a hall way in a wooden building with four class rooms on either side. all with wooden swinging doors that are painted light green. the floor is brown and noisy and there are glass windows from the hallway into the class but screen windows from the classroom to the outside.)

and went home. (i dreamt about the current house, not my old house!) i was lying in my bed and two black and red scorpions were crawling on my wall so i ran out of my room and tried to figure out where i should go next. i realized i left the film unfixed and uncovered! vintage photos exposing as i speak!! i went back to the the school lab room (i think it was a photo/science lab) but the film was gone. i started looking for it. could be anywhere! more students were already starting to come into the class. i had some people help me look for it- june

(irl, she used to work in the kcc micro prep room. but i only talked to her once! i wish i had gotten to know her. but don't know why i randomly dreamt of her. she stopped working two semesters ago...)

and kelie (my mlt classmate) was there and a couple other people and everyone was wearing shorts.
we couldn't find the film. i felt like we spent a lot... a LONG time looking. just going back and forth to different places and looking in cabinets and desks. but we couldn't find the film.

the end.

Girls and Boys

There are a lot of girly blogs for girls featuring clothes and music and fashion and art and make up and lolita style and girly sparkly feminine girl girl stuff. and i also tend to post girly stuff on here.

but i am not one to discriminate. here are two blogs i enjoy that cater toward a masculine audience:

Art of Manliness

it's like a lifehacker specifically for men.
fashion outfit advice, grooming advice, interviews with iconic men, how-tos on specific manly tasks, cultural tidbits, ordering manly cocktails, and even history/origins of commonly used objects.

i enjoy these blogs a lot, even though many topics don't apply to me (ie, mustache trimming, pocket hankerchiefs, various designer brands), and hope more men can inject some culture in their life. stuff for men, girl approved.

my favorite article (applies to both sexes): how to lace your brogues

*end of summer break*

i start summer school on the 24th (morning) and work (evening at straub) and hopefully some research work (hoping to grow some amoebas!) until fall (which i have not registered for classes yet).

at some point, i need to take allison out to lunch because i didn't see her on her birthday. and i want to get my nails done. and i need to catch up on nph stuff. and i need to go to the beach and play hero quest and spend time with le boyfriend. and i need to study for the board exam asdfkalsdkfjalsdkfj! so much to do and so little time...

today i went to HMC west (so nice there!!) for some orientation stuff for clinical labs and then dad bought me lunch from taniokas (fried chicken, musubi, and corned beef hash). we raced home, ate and downed coffee (while watching overhaling, good times.) and then went to the beach.  makapu'u was so beautiful today... and later i played L4D2 and got the guardin' gnome achievement (thanks martin for telling me about it!). gnome chomsky is so cute.

slightly related content:

(since rochelle is wearing a pink depeche mode shirt in L4D2! and you can get one for your xbox avatar if you finish the gaurdin' gnome task!)

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... final exam tomorrowwwwwww!
here's a band i like that plays super emo music to make you [me] feel worse!

sounds like afi and alkaline trio and i love you but i've chosen darkness. but mostly like alkaline trio. <3

(post note- it has come to my attention that dear and departed have toured and performed with alkaline trio.)

i'm actually totally in love with this music (CD is only $5! mayhaps i'll get it) but i'm not happy about it because i am not happy about final exam.
not happpy. 8|

studying textbook blood bank today.
i don't understand why we are asked questions on Wiener nomenclature for Rh antigens when it is no longer officially used. i think saying "1, 2, -3, -4, 5" is easier than "big R 1, little r prime" or what ever it translates to. good riddance! alas, old habits die hard and people (AND the official board of registry study guide) still refers to units as being R1R1 or R2r' etc. guhhh!

today i met a regular courier for BBH.
He looked at me and then told my trainer,
"I see we have some fresh blood in the lab!"
