Mistaking cables for veins can be quite misleading,
friction sparks the metal made it look like bleeding

Los Campesinos! makes me want to get up and dance and sing! plus their lyrics are so crazy cool, singing about taking on the robot apocalypse (and you know what i think about robots).

anyway, topic of today is
things i find interesting (a.k.a. same stuff as usual)

got my bio exam score back. i got a C (74%).
there are two ways to take this:

1. OH CRAP I SHOULD'VE STUDIED. yeah. i looked at my book for about 10 minutes. i'm so over this class already. if i actually studied i probably could have gotten a B or maybe an A. that shows me to talk about knowing bio like the back of my hand.

2. YOU'RE WELCOME. so, apparently i have the second highest grade in the class, despite it being a C. the highest grade in the class was a 79%. ha! not even one B or A! and i have a feeling that everyone else studied really, REALLY hard for this test since last exam 50% of the class had a C. this time there were 3 Cs and mostly everyone else were in the 50% range. and everyone i talked to said they actually studied really hard for this test. like, made flash cards and study groups and the works. oh wow, i feel guilty. but hey, since the whole class did crap, the crap teacher is giving us a non cumulative final exam that will be open book and our daily quizzes are going to be extra credit. ahahahaaa... at this point, i'm going to get a B without even studying (i've been calculating my grade every week) and if she decides to curve then i'll have an A! this is so ridiculous- there is no way i would have gotten off so easy if i took it in a regular semester!

this book is so beautiful!!! borrowed it from the library and wish i had my own!
it's informational and has some humor.
science is just awesome.

my atula is home! can't wait to go to the beach with her!

i'm making a dress for bon dance. i bought some red kokeshi doll fabric from le walmart and am making a cute dress to go under my hapi coat. so far i have teh skirt done (bottom needs to be hemmed) and a top done now i need to connect the pieces and add straps. i only worked on it about four or five hours today so i'll have to finish those parts next weekend.

this weekend i watched a lot of movies. friday night after work went to layne's cousin's house with the motley crew and watched step it up 2 (boys wanted to see hot girls) and the zohan movie. on saturday we went back and watched drunken master and dragon tiger gate. there was also popcorn eating, rummy playing, and nerf shooting (and a little bit of battlefield in between) going on. on saturday afternoon i also ate at genki with R and walked around ala moana. i bought the vans shirt i was pining for (because i am a vans addict as much as i am a volcom addict) and also looked at the boys shoes. i want to get le boyfriend a pair of vans for his birthday but i don't know his size! i have to sneakily find out in the next few weeks. (as a side note, i was also considering buying him battlefield for his birthday but i have a feeling he's going to break down and buy it for himself in the next few weeks... like when fallout came out, haha.)

things i didn't do this weekend:
1. go to the bank. :/
2. campy work. wasn't planning to go (only going to do the colony counts on tuesday) but it turned out the p41 strain we were going to be testing didn't grow enough (again!!). can't do the experiment without the bacteria. le sigh.

last night i dreamt i ate my frozen snickers bar. so when i went to the freezer today and saw it was still there i was so surprised! this must be a sign that i should eat it soon before someone else does.

and now i will answer the friday 5:

1. Oh my goodness! You have to run out the door right now and you haven’t eaten! Before dashing out, what do you grab to wolf down on your way?
COFFEEEEEEE... my one true love... <3 black please.
if i have a couple more minutes i'll put [plain] rice krispies in a red plastic cup with some milk [lactose free, pls] and a plastic spoon. my real favorite breakfast.

2. What’s a popular breakfast you dislike?
i like jook but not for breakfast, thanks. i'd rather have it for lunch or dinner. i also prefer my omelettes without bell peppers but if they're there i'll eat em. also, i think english muffins and canadian bacon are difficult to eat. together and seperately. they taste fine but it's just unwieldy. again, if you offer them to me, i'll still eat it (how can i turn down tasty food?)

3. You’re going out for breakfast anywhere you want, and someone else is treating! Where do you go and what do you order?
i heard Tango has an eggs benedict to die for. haven't tried it yet, tho.

4. What do you have when you need a simple, healthy (or healthy-ish, for those of you who just don’t do healthy!) breakfast?
usually my breakfast consists of only coffee or no breakfast. so i'm not really sure what to say here.

5. You’ve been invited to a breakfast potluck. What are you most likely to bring?
fruit platter.
or, you bring the ingredients and i'll make you the hollandaise sauce.

last but not least, picked up my diplomas!

and now i'm a license-eligible mlt. :)
i've also graduated from LA training and now am going on to LAS training.
got to fly solo to the ER and also aided in two bone marrows.
and tomorrow i'm working evening shift. can't wait to see what the day [night] brings.
(another thing that has been bothering me: mysterious phone message from DLS. still haven't been able to reach the lady who called me. i am so so so curious now...)

ok, dreamworld is calling me.
zzz...

Hard Sticks

totally killed my ER Draws today!
and i mean "killed" in a good way!
training with LL in the ER for most of this week. i got two hard sticks in a row and i was able to draw them both! then i had two more ER draws that i was able to get. i'm starting to like the more immobilized... camatose... non speaking... patients because they don't complain! (i'm not a misanthrope, promise!)
also got to do 1630 rounds by myself again. today the 6th floor, yesterday the 4th floor. and a few inpatient draws. i feel so independent! like little red riding hood with my little tackle box of phlebotomy stuffs.
ok, this is starting to sound so wrong... i'm picturing little red riding hood in a white hood with a basket of needles and squeeky shoes. :/
anyway, i'm trying really hard to be nice to all the patients. i got sworn at several times already, i'm hoping if i kill them with kindness they'll return the favor the next time i stick them.
on the other hand, just when i thought i was getting pretty good at processing, i got written up for sending some specimens aliquotted when they should have been whole blood. :'( i sent an extra tube of whole blood so i'm kind of bummed that i got written up anyway. i see that i made a mistake but if they had what they needed i wish they didn't have to make a fuss! i had to fill out "occurence" papers and it probably gets filed away under my name. T____T so now i'm making extra sure my send outs are correct. only problem is i second guess a lot of stuff and end up checking it on the computer and it takes longer. T____T it turns out i'm a fail processor instead of an awesome processor. i wish everyone just had normal tests or tests that can be run in house. so complicated to send everything out.
ciao, and here's to tomorrow being better than yesterday~

PS-
my diplomas have arrived! i will pick them up tomorrow if time permits! >w<

i'm kind of in this gothic electro phase

but i still have a soft spot for pop punk rock

signed off

haven't updated because nothing exciting has really happened.
just work and school and stuff.

i'm really starting to get in the groove at work.
finally got signed off in "processing" where you receive and process specimens and then do the pending logs and send outs. this means that i can officially cover the processor when he/she is on breaks or rotate into that section. :) it's been so chaotic for the LAs since i started. seems like i've gone to every section but haven't been signed off in any department because there's no time or man power to do official training. i don't mind right now, i get to keep busy and help out whoever needs me instead of being stuck in only one section.

at school...
i'm irritated with the professor. she is too dizzy and not informative enough. i would stop going to lecture if not for the daily non-makeup-able quizzes. she reads straight out of the book. i can do this at home on my own time. :/ truthfully, i barely even study for that class because biol 171 is the same as bio and ap bio and with little bits of all the other science classes i've ever taken and i feel a little guilty. oh well, have to do what you have to do.

i live for the weekends.
so far i have weekends off although that's about to change in a few weeks and it's been super chill. sometimes just end up hanging out and not going on any real adventures but the company is so nice. no dramas and no expectations. that's how life is supposed to be, right? play cards and video games and board games. i learned how to play some things on a guitar. go to the comic book store. sometimes we go to the beach. or walk around waikiki. yesterday we spent several hours at walmart in the toy section (lol, don't ask). and a few times we tested out some mythbusters experiments. :) i guess my only complaint is sometimes i miss the estrogen, haha.

saturday was research day but we didn't have enough bacteria for an assay. :(
i was kind of dissappointed. but since i set up all the plates and all the dilutions already, it will be a super easy day next week when we try again.

i've been doing a lot of shopping.
i bought leopard print Melissa Ultragirl shoes because they are so cute and super hard to find! not even online stores have melissa shoes, most of the time! i already have one in flocked black and they are DA BOMB so when i saw the leopard ones in person, i snatched them up! i also found a volcom purple and white striped dress $20 off at ala moana (the last xs too!) and as you know i am a volcom addictttt... summer time is perfect for wearing dresses (so sick of scrubs. i think i get super girly when i'm off work, haha. i also really miss wearing jeans and i'm going to miss wearing all my earrings. les supervisors just realized i have three gauged holes...) and i got persuaded by the sales girl since it was on clearance and the last one. :P
and then i had to get a new set of headphones because the previous ones broke tossing my bag around too much and then i also got a new pair of scrub pants (minty green!) soi'm not wearing black all the time. and i also bought a deck of cards so i have a regular deck for playing and the weird deck for practicing flourishes. my defense is they were bicycle 125s! special edition anniversary deck! and we play rummy or trumps every weekend so it won't go to waste... i need shopping rehab.

new metric videos:

sick muse is still my favorite video and black sheep/freddy is still my favorite song (right now).

YEA, I COULD BUTTERFLY THAT

Randall, a phlebotomist who started just after me told me the other day that he was looking at his feet one day and started noticing a lot of veins that he had never seen before. he said that phlebotomy has opened his eyes to veins!
i replied that after starting phlebotomy i started looking at other people's veins. like when i'm on the bus or in class or wherever, i am always looking at people's arms to see if they have good veins.
and then freddilyn, a more seasoned phlebotomist said, "i do that too! and i check out people's hands and feet and think 'YEA, I COULD BUTTERFLY THAT'."
LOL !! my new favorite phrase.

when i am looking at you, now you know what i am really thinking. ;)

FANTASIES

Just got the news I've been dreaming about- MONOCLONAL CENTER!! A doctor I know just got a new grant (thousandsssss of dollars) to open a monoclonal antibody center to create novel research antibodies, in the fall. And he said I would be perfect there.
Oh gods, all my fantastic nerd dreams are coming true- a research job making antibodies, working for the coolest people I know in science...
Not going to count any chickens before they hatch but I'm just saying- I'd rearrange my entire life in an instant to work in an immuno/micro/molecular research lab...

And in other good news, Matt's Cancer Class (rebranding of the MICR 230?) is a go for fall. Totally want to get my hands on mutant DNA and siRNA and see what cytology is like and who knows what other fun... I wish I had more time to do everything!!

Friday Five (6/5/10)

You can answer the Friday5.org too!

When did you take time this week to play?
Saturday, what a day, feeling like the fourth of july...
saturday is my play day. i really try not to do any homework or studying on saturdays. i went shopping with @yummiestars and later spent time with le boyfriend and ken and later, the rest of our motley crew. wasn't too exciting, no activities planned and no board games. just talking and stuff... anything besides being at work (and school) is good enough for me.

This past week, what would you have liked to rewind so you could experience it again?
the ten seconds of pure elation when the BOR exam flashed in its tiny font "PASS". my heart skipped a beat and i grinned and then i was in la la land.

What happened this week to give you pause?
my whole week stopped when the dizzy bio professor suddenly decided the lab report format should be radically changed... less work in the long run but so so so much confusion.

From what situation this week would you have liked to eject yourself?
pre BOR exam anxiety.
and doing CBGs on inpatients. i can draw blood from veins and hands fine but something about the finger sticks i have trouble with. literally takes a minute for me to do it because i can't get the one drop of blood to be squeezed out of the finger... maybe i should squeeze their fingers harder? i would feel bad. (and to add to my neurosis, i have no issues with poking people with giant needles but i feel guilty for squeezing their fingers? ahahaha... @___@ )

In what situation this week did you cede power to someone else?
i told my supervisor i would be willing to work on sunday mornings at 5am to do morning rounds.

S M I L E . . .

Check!
