here's my friday5!  you can answer them for yourself or see others' answers here:

  1. What was in yesterday’s mail?
my new tires!  i entered a fyxation photo contest (and didn't win) but got a nice discount as a consolation.  i picked up some new tires because my back tire is starting to wear down.  skidding on everything, lately, and it's pretty scary trying to break at the intersection on the bottom of queen emma street if i'm flying down hill... since they were all the same price, i decided to go with white tires so they match my girly-pink-bikeness better.  no boys will want to steal it now!  700x23 for my front (the aero) and 28s for my rear.
  2. What are the most fun and least fun items on your to-do list for the weekend?
most fun: i'm OFF THIS WEEKEND AHHHH!  man, it's been a long week.  i've been catching up with my competency assignments at work since i was on vacay for three weeks. :X  everyone else got their hematology annual competency the first week of august and it is due today.  i got mine on the 22nd but luckily i was able to finish in time.  now i still have to finish my CAP assignments and chemistry annual competency.  but anyway, back to my FUN ITEMS ON MY WEEKEND LIST, going to hang out with le boyfriend on saturday (maybe he will take me to the movies, wink wink, Premium Rush just came out...) and on sunday my research group is having a beginning of the semester party.  :D  there's also okinawan festival (but not sure if i'm going) and monday is a holiday!  i'm working monday night but that don't mean no time for bikeventure in the day...

least fun: gotta pound out some math homework and chemistry notes, of course!  i also need to do laundry, clean my jalousies, and do a bathroom decontamination again, arghhh.

  3. What are you running out of?
clean scrubs! gotta do laundry soon. :(  good thing i have all black & navy blue, easy to make a full load when everything is the same color.

  4. What gives you peace?
    this song:

  5. What are the best and worst things about YouTube?
best: you can learn how to do anything!
worst:  videos that are NOT what their descriptions/titles/tags say they are. :(

and now for the local, late-breaking news...

my vacation ended- too soon, of course- and i'm back to the usual grind.  school in the day then work all night.  dinner at 7am and sleeping on the bus.  research work and grocery shopping somewhere in between all that.  :P  but it's only been two weeks, i'm not dead yet!  i'll let you know in another two weeks if i've become a zombie yet.*

* whether it be from stress turning my brain to mush or a virus i pick up from the research lab, dear blog readers, you will be the first to know.

before i officially hit the books i watched my second to the last load of library DVDs.*  i really loved Whip It!, a coming of age story about roller derby.  i still have my roller skates in my closet, i want to go dig them out now!  (as if my busted hip from skateboarding and getting hit by a car on my bicycle wasn't enough...)  i liked the bad ass demeanor of the roller girls and the sound track was pretty top notch too.  MGMT, strokes, raveonettes to name a few. ;)

i also LOVE LOVE LOVED Let Me In, an american remake of the  european vampire story Let the Right One In.  It is THE BEST vampire movie i've ever seen.  it's also not too over the top and seemed more based on friendship and naiveté than the vampire part.  i do admit i am a macabre person and i think my favorite part of the movie was when the "father" is trying to commit a murder and it's going all wrong!  you actually start feeling bad for the guy even though you know what is supposed to happen to his victim! :D  great directing/story telling on this part, i don't think there is any dialogue (besides background chatter) in this whole scene but you know exactly what happens (or what's supposed to) anyway.

two more movies i watched: Memento [mindfucked!] and (500) Days of Summer [everyone said this was an awesome movie and i was so excited to see it but i was totally unimpressed.  it was a movie about nothing.]

* i have 2 more to close out my summer, that i haven't watched yet and they are Rango and Daybreakers.  i also await Avengers, when it comes to DVD in september, but alas, i am position 210 on the reserve list so i might not see it until december.  i hope the library gets more than one copy.

mean while, back at the ranch, I FINISHED READING THE STAND!  holy cow, i never thought i would be able to finish a book that long, let alone on my ipod.  but i did it, all 3844 pages!  true to mr. king's style, it wasn't a perfect happily ever after ending but it was the only way.  it had to be.  good guys finish last sometimes.  T__T  and evil never really goes away, does it?  now i gotta go back to the dark tower and look for missed Stand references.  for the record, i've decided i like larry a lot more now and i like frannie a lot less than when the book started.

my current reading is Stiff by Mary Roach.  i've been reading Mary Roach for years, via Reader's Digest, but for some reason, i've always skipped over this book.  now that i've almost completely given up reading fiction (stephen king doesn't count because i believe them to be true stories... from another reality), it's nice to have a little comedy once in a while.  also, did i mention i am a bit macabre? ;)  the cadaver story is really fascinating to me.  even now that i have a real job (which i love) i would not turn down the opportunity to train and work as a mortician...
reading while i eat is my usual routine if i have work and school; it's about the only down-time i get.  as i reflected on my day, i was slightly amused that i was reading (about decomposing cadavers) and eating dinner (a steak) simultaneously.  i feel like i should be repulsed... but i can't stop laughing.

i saved the best news for last,
I'M GOING TO SACNAS!  it's confirmed, my first trip to Seattle will be for this conference.  i'm presenting campy data and i'm really excited to go!  at first i was apathetic, didn't even submit an abstract.  but lucas wanted to send something in and we got accepted!  now i have something to look forward to in october.  now i just have to crunch my data (uhg, statistics) for the poster to top it off.

i wanted to jazz this up with more pictures but i have to nap before work.
happy labor day weekend! <3 p="p">

i'm going through a b&w phase again.  it makes 6400iso look better. ;)

  1. The Stand was the only King book I had previously read, though now I am nearly done with The Shining (had seen the movie, but the book's emphasis differs quite a bit). Wondering which King I should try next. Suggestions?

Most engrossing new author/book recently has been The Gone-Away World, by Nick Harkaway.

    1. if you liked The Stand because everything went to hell really fast go for Under the Dome. If the length of Under the Dome scares you (but vampires don't scare you) i'd go for salem's lot (one of my favorites!!) on a completely different note, if you like adventures of old people kicking butt (and seeing auras) try Insomnia. and if you like fables and dragons try Eyes of the Dragon.
i've never read the shining but maybe i will look into that as soon as i finish At Home by Bill Bryson. (funny history- non fiction- of everyday household items). ;) i will also be looking in to Nick Harkaway since you recommend it. thanks!!

    2. Thanks for recommendations! Just finished Under the Dome. Not bad. I also read Full Dark, No Stars when I couldn't decide among the library's other available selections. That one did indeed contain some darkness. SWMBO is nearly done with Carrie, so I'll probably try that one next before it gets returned. I guess we're on kind of a kick — if there's one thing King knows how to do, it's craft a page-turner. Will keep my eye out for Salem's Lot and Insomnia. Should be interesting to compare movies for Salem's Lot and Carrie (remake also coming) to their books.

    3. I read the first two stories of full dark but didn't get to finish. My favorite s. king short story collection is everything's eventual. After (if) you get to salem's lot, there is also another short story with the same title of something that happens there. Can't remember which collection it is, maybe Night Shift? The same collection that has children of the corn and man who loved flowers.
