here's my friday5!  you can answer them for yourself or see others' answers here:

  1. What was in yesterday’s mail?
my new tires!  i entered a fyxation photo contest (and didn't win) but got a nice discount as a consolation.  i picked up some new tires because my back tire is starting to wear down.  skidding on everything, lately, and it's pretty scary trying to break at the intersection on the bottom of queen emma street if i'm flying down hill... since they were all the same price, i decided to go with white tires so they match my girly-pink-bikeness better.  no boys will want to steal it now!  700x23 for my front (the aero) and 28s for my rear.
  2. What are the most fun and least fun items on your to-do list for the weekend?
most fun: i'm OFF THIS WEEKEND AHHHH!  man, it's been a long week.  i've been catching up with my competency assignments at work since i was on vacay for three weeks. :X  everyone else got their hematology annual competency the first week of august and it is due today.  i got mine on the 22nd but luckily i was able to finish in time.  now i still have to finish my CAP assignments and chemistry annual competency.  but anyway, back to my FUN ITEMS ON MY WEEKEND LIST, going to hang out with le boyfriend on saturday (maybe he will take me to the movies, wink wink, Premium Rush just came out...) and on sunday my research group is having a beginning of the semester party.  :D  there's also okinawan festival (but not sure if i'm going) and monday is a holiday!  i'm working monday night but that don't mean no time for bikeventure in the day...

least fun: gotta pound out some math homework and chemistry notes, of course!  i also need to do laundry, clean my jalousies, and do a bathroom decontamination again, arghhh.

  3. What are you running out of?
clean scrubs! gotta do laundry soon. :(  good thing i have all black & navy blue, easy to make a full load when everything is the same color.

  4. What gives you peace?
    this song:

  5. What are the best and worst things about YouTube?
best: you can learn how to do anything!
worst:  videos that are NOT what their descriptions/titles/tags say they are. :(

and now for the local, late-breaking news...

my vacation ended- too soon, of course- and i'm back to the usual grind.  school in the day then work all night.  dinner at 7am and sleeping on the bus.  research work and grocery shopping somewhere in between all that.  :P  but it's only been two weeks, i'm not dead yet!  i'll let you know in another two weeks if i've become a zombie yet.*

* whether it be from stress turning my brain to mush or a virus i pick up from the research lab, dear blog readers, you will be the first to know.

before i officially hit the books i watched my second to the last load of library DVDs.*  i really loved Whip It!, a coming of age story about roller derby.  i still have my roller skates in my closet, i want to go dig them out now!  (as if my busted hip from skateboarding and getting hit by a car on my bicycle wasn't enough...)  i liked the bad ass demeanor of the roller girls and the sound track was pretty top notch too.  MGMT, strokes, raveonettes to name a few. ;)

i also LOVE LOVE LOVED Let Me In, an american remake of the  european vampire story Let the Right One In.  It is THE BEST vampire movie i've ever seen.  it's also not too over the top and seemed more based on friendship and naiveté than the vampire part.  i do admit i am a macabre person and i think my favorite part of the movie was when the "father" is trying to commit a murder and it's going all wrong!  you actually start feeling bad for the guy even though you know what is supposed to happen to his victim! :D  great directing/story telling on this part, i don't think there is any dialogue (besides background chatter) in this whole scene but you know exactly what happens (or what's supposed to) anyway.

two more movies i watched: Memento [mindfucked!] and (500) Days of Summer [everyone said this was an awesome movie and i was so excited to see it but i was totally unimpressed.  it was a movie about nothing.]

* i have 2 more to close out my summer, that i haven't watched yet and they are Rango and Daybreakers.  i also await Avengers, when it comes to DVD in september, but alas, i am position 210 on the reserve list so i might not see it until december.  i hope the library gets more than one copy.

mean while, back at the ranch, I FINISHED READING THE STAND!  holy cow, i never thought i would be able to finish a book that long, let alone on my ipod.  but i did it, all 3844 pages!  true to mr. king's style, it wasn't a perfect happily ever after ending but it was the only way.  it had to be.  good guys finish last sometimes.  T__T  and evil never really goes away, does it?  now i gotta go back to the dark tower and look for missed Stand references.  for the record, i've decided i like larry a lot more now and i like frannie a lot less than when the book started.

my current reading is Stiff by Mary Roach.  i've been reading Mary Roach for years, via Reader's Digest, but for some reason, i've always skipped over this book.  now that i've almost completely given up reading fiction (stephen king doesn't count because i believe them to be true stories... from another reality), it's nice to have a little comedy once in a while.  also, did i mention i am a bit macabre? ;)  the cadaver story is really fascinating to me.  even now that i have a real job (which i love) i would not turn down the opportunity to train and work as a mortician...
reading while i eat is my usual routine if i have work and school; it's about the only down-time i get.  as i reflected on my day, i was slightly amused that i was reading (about decomposing cadavers) and eating dinner (a steak) simultaneously.  i feel like i should be repulsed... but i can't stop laughing.

i saved the best news for last,
I'M GOING TO SACNAS!  it's confirmed, my first trip to Seattle will be for this conference.  i'm presenting campy data and i'm really excited to go!  at first i was apathetic, didn't even submit an abstract.  but lucas wanted to send something in and we got accepted!  now i have something to look forward to in october.  now i just have to crunch my data (uhg, statistics) for the poster to top it off.

i wanted to jazz this up with more pictures but i have to nap before work.
happy labor day weekend! <3 p="p">

i'm going through a b&w phase again.  it makes 6400iso look better. ;)

i'm answering the friday5!  you can see others' answers or answer for your self here:
  1. What public behavior is not a crime but should be?
USING THE BATHROOM AND NOT WASHING YOUR HANDS!!!!!  this is so gross, if you don't care about others, at least do it for your own well being!  even if you don't actually use the bathroom, just being in the vacinity of flushing- splashing- toilets or touching door handles is close enough.  yeah, yeah i hear all this stuff about strengthening your immune system when you get sick but think about the suffering while being sick!  do you want e.coli? shigella? campy? noro? salmonella? proteus? vibrio?  fever, barfing, stomach cramps, diarrhea, paralysis from g-b?
  2. What food item doesn’t have a recommended daily allowance but should?
    here are my proposals:
ice cream: up to 3 scoops a day
coffee: minimum 3 cups a day
licorice: as needed in stressful situations
  3. What’s not a word but should be?
i learned this from @rickyli99: farfignewton!

  4. What day of the year is not a holiday but should be?
birthday of uncle louis!  as in Louis Pasteur, father of microbiology. :)
  5. What behavior is not generally a professional expectation but should be?
note taking!  yes, even in non office jobs, you ought to carry a small note pad and write down everything.  instructions should be delivered once.  questions answered once.  then do your duty!  if you take notes when the answers are given to you, there is no need for repeating.  what do i expect out of the company i work for? well written procedures.  that's all i ask.  :/  if you don't know the answer i want to at least be able to look up the answer for myself instead of slowing down work by stopping someone else and asking them.
today i watched Men who stare at goats.
at first i was dubious this actually happened but, i suppose anything is possible with LSD...

in other news,
i need this!!

i wish i remembered to add it to my zatanna order (yes, i finally filled the holes in my collection!!)
but i spent my shopping money on COTQ. :)  worth every penny.

today begins week two of my vacation!! enjoying my time away form work and school and research but i have to admit i haven't done much. been down for the count the last four days due to a back injury. T___T

not entirely sure how this happened or why... but maybe its because i was having fun all day everyday when my vacation started. >u<;;

on the friday before my vacation even started, had my jabsom/inbre summer research presentation. biked down to kakaako in a pencil skirt, go me. ;D got to talk to a few professors, and got some helpful critique from dr. dean. he's a tissue culture specialist with recommendations for our non sticky helas.

^ my research homies

this coming week i will probably do a campy growth curve in trypsin/versene so we can get back to doing [what i do best] invasion assays.

saturday was bon dance day! went to koganji for food and friends and fun! i really look forward to this festival. i love lion dance during chinese new year but i don't get to have as much fun as this japanese tradition because you can't participate unless you know the moves. in bon dance everyone can join! le boyfriend is somewhat apathetic about obon season but i really love it because i never had this tradition. i joke that i have 20 years of dancing experience to catch up on so i need to do every song (except when i am stuffing my face with yummy foods)!

^ ran into some long lost friends!

suit up

the next day le boyfriend took me to archery. my first time shooting! i found out i'm a lefty. :P got lots of tips from the kaneshiges <3 and also got a really good tan. tee hee.

target practice

after that le boyfriend took me to watch dark knight rises! Ó U Ó ahhhhhh! finally! it had a different story than what i would have liked but my main comment on the whole series is Dir. Nolan did a REALLY GOOD JOB of grounding the story in reality. gotham could be real. these events could have happened. it was like watching your fantasy come to life- and i really appreciate it. i probablly would have complained [more] if it was too fantastical. so i will be content with what has happened.

// more dark knight discussion //

• i knew it was talia !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ok, my other guess was huntress (aka helena) but i KNEW marion cotillard was not who she said she was!!! they even said "child of ras"! but since she's gone, i guess there will be no damien.

• blake was more like tim drake than jason todd or dick grayson because of his detective skills [and lack of acrobatic skills] but i suppose they avoided what could be a hot debate by just using his nickname. smart move, nolan. smart move.

• so glad lazarus pit became a "theoretical lazarus pit" not a mystical pool of bubbling stuff that brings you back to life. that would have been way too over the top.

• catwoman feels unnecessary. is it the jealous batman-infatuated school girl in me talking? maybe. but i felt catwoman was unnecessary to the main plot and not very interesting. i guess it was better characterized than previous catwomen. (claws, pssssh.)

• is it just me or did it seem like the 5 months in limbo was like NML?

• i want more GCPD stories! :D i even mentioned in a previous blog (i think) that it would make a cool tv show. it's like csi and law and order except GCPD has to work extra hard because batman makes them look bad! the comic book series had dirty cops, interdepartment drama, political drama... oh and catching guys like firebug (flame thrower action!) and mad hatter (poisoned victims).

//end extended discussion//

the next day i biked with twinkies. her first ride from home to ward, so proud! dad picked us up and drove us home the last half mile up hill, maybe ward was a little too far for her. :X

a list of movies i watched this summer:

• cowboys and aliens ("demons took you gold, you can ask for it back when you go to hell!")
• the number 23 (sometimes i wonder if i'm going crazy looking for 19s)
• stay (i had to watch this twice because i was confused)
• black swan (i was not expecting this! ø___ø )
• safehouse (meh. but i still think it's cool to be a super spy)
• brothers bloom (*tear*)
• the maiden heist (tee heee heee!)
• super8 ("production value!")
• MOON (i feel weird)
• everything is illuminated (a "most premium" movie)
• kiss of the dragon (i love shrimp chips)

movies i have borrowed and not watched yet:

• wool 100%
• let me in
• i love you philip morris
• men who stare at goats

movies i am waiting to borrow:

• machette
• daybreakers
• jacob's ladder
• memento

and now i lie here, incapacitated by my messed up back. i am really upset that i've wasted so much time being unproductive but on the other hand i can't make myself be more productive... i feel like crying after standing for long periods of time. sitting or lying down doesn't really help either. yesterday i had kt tape on my back and it was miraculous. but i put the tape on today (well, twinkies helped me put it on) and i think it's slightly different because it is totally NOT HELPING right now. i think i am ready to see a doctor but i don't have one yet (my pediatrician told me i was getting too old a few years ago so i never went back). i just keep telling myself surely, it will be gone by tomorrow and everyday i wake up in agony. :( my bicycle is crying. my bikinis are lonely. i need to go feed my bacteria. so many adventures to be had! but i'm stuck here...
