NO ONE EVER DUG DOWN SO FAR AS WE GO

aloha, hope everyone is spending a relaxing sunday at home, after the excitement of last night's tsunami warning! no action besides some increased wave activity and surges, thankfully.

as for myself, i was still severely congested and my face was being crushed by the sinus pressure, so after 11pm, i took an antihistimine and knocked out until morning.  according to my mom, i did wake up at around 1am to walk back to my room and ask why there were colored blocks on the tv???  haha, don't remember at all.

today i'm working eve shift (3-11p) instead of my regular night.  so i'm just practicing ochem (quiz on monday, ahhhhahahahahahhhh) and drinking coffee and indulging in STRFKR.  i have Bury Us Alive on repeat for the last two days.

and now for the friday 5!
you can answer for yourself or see others' answers here: http://f.riday5.com/?p=703

  1. What was the cause of your last working up a sweat?
blahhhhhhh... just lying around at home i'm sweating!  can't wait for the humidity to pass and the trade winds to return!  i'm feeling a hint of trades today, hopefully we're back to normal soon. :)
as for reqular exercising, haven't been doing much of that lately, unless you count running after buses or walking back and forth between two chemistry analyzers during morning rounds.

  2. What routine part of your life seems to take more mental effort for you than for most others?
i'm kind of bad at mental math.  i can do it, but i'm slow.  especially if you're asking me dilutions like, how do i make a 10% formalin PBS solution form formaldehyde (formalin is 37% formaldehyde).  my comrades will be like, dilute the formaldehyde to 37% with formalin and then fill with PBS to volume so if you are making a 50ml of formalin PBS you need 18ml...
and i'm still going in my head, WAIT, WUT?  37% IS HOW MUCH OF 100ML? SLOWWWW DOWWWWWN! i end up having to write it out or the crickets are chirping for a few minutes before i can confirm their mental math. :/
  3. What’s something many others consider laborious but you consider rather easy?
oooooh, i love to be in processing section at work.  i am pretty good at separating tests, aliquoting, and remembering where they are to be sent off at work.  the tests are written in a test code, not plain english, so it's a feat for first timers to remember things like ANA=0.5ml serum sent to west vs. ANARX= two 0.5ml serum aliquots sent to west.  or LUPAC= double spun citrate plasma, frozen. or VD25=0.5ml serum sent to CPL frozen.  CRYAG= red top sterile serum sent to ARUP vs. CRYO= red top clotted at 37ºC sent to west. i just know these things- my brain is like a recipe book, hahah. i think i could make a pretty good bar tender.

  4. What’s something you’re going to have to do really soon but have been putting off just because it’s going to be a lot of work?
    Calc 2 homework.  i haven't done any of chapter 6. U___U

  5. Where’s the steepest hill in your neighborhood?
Concordia St. is up the hill from my house and it is A HILL to be reckoned with.  i haven't even attempted biking up Concordia- i'll go all the way to the intersection and make a U-turn to get on Puowaina, if i ever head up that way, instead of going the few yards up Concordia.  just nasty.
and one more thing before i go, my two recent accomplishments:
I MADE IT TO RED WORLD IN ONE TOUCH DRAWING! (with no cheats, hell yeah. love puzzles~)
and I GOT THE MARBLES POP OUT! (uhhhh, i can only do it one out of 5 times but, i'm still practicing.  soon i will be pro!)

ok, bye!
and don't forget, you better be dancing while you read this:

THAT ONE TIME WE WENT TO THAT COLD PLACE

hey guys and dolls,
i have returned triumphantly from my microbiology con[quest]ference in the faraway lands of seattle!  i haven't updated earlier because i got back after midnight on monday. then tuesday i was catching up on homework. and then weds/thurs/fri i was already back to worksies and *still* catching up on school (calc2 exam zomggggg T____T ) and then i caught the virus that is spreading through my work place and spent saturday up to now, hacking my lungs up and bleeding from the nose and i expect any day now my brain will turn to mush and i will die and subsequently rise from the dead in a zombified form to finish my research project and forage for brains.

buuuuut, more about our triumphant conquest...
if you follow my flickr, i've been posting seattle pics even before we got back so you probably know what is up.  and if you don't follow my flickr, the summary of my trip was:

1) IT WAS COLD!

on the pier

2) WE DID OUR PRESENTATIONS!

poster 1159

3) BUT THERE WAS TIME TO DO SOME SIGHTSEEING!

walking seattle, hunting for food

walking seattle, hunting for food

4) AND ENJOY GOOD FOOD AND DRINK!

post presentation celebrations!

@ kells

5) WE ENDED UP TAKING HOME AN AWARD!

flaring on stage!

6) WISH WE COULD'VE STAYED LONGER. :)

photo boothing

the conference was great (holy cow fred hutch cancer center is amazing), the detour from work and school was welcome and i definitely bonded with my research group and other stem students more than i would have just doing my own lab project.  getting the award (and cheering on everyone else from our group that also got awards!!!!) was icing on the cake!  we partied hard after that night and i ended up adding a tattoo to commemorate "that one time we went to that cold place"- a seattle rain cloud & lightning bolt. :D

(thanks, under the needle tattoo!)

you can see the whole trip set here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/synonyme_c/sets/72157631742214712/
and i'll probably have another update later about specific adventures we went on.

and now for my status quo,
yes, i really am super sick.  not like flu sick or septicemia sick, just pneumonia sick and i'm super duper tired.  and it's really humid and hard to sleep.  and work has been really busy (two mass transfusions on eve shift, what what?! which kind of backed everything up on to nights and i didn't get to drink my coffee and i was super grumpy *sorry, coworkers!*) and i am back to doing invasion assays (long experiments) and ugggggghhhhhhh there goes the house of cards.
but sorry for ranting.  that was rude of me.

how about... some comic book news!
ZOMGGGGGGG.  JOKER IS BACK, HARLEY IS BACK, ZATANNA & CONSTANTINE ADVENTURE, PHANTOM STRANGER & RACHEL ROTH, FLASH JOKES ABOUT MAKING OUT WITH TOASTERS... i can't wait for november!
*sigh* young justice is on hiatus again.  m'gann is really pissing me off, though.  she messed up the secret plan arrrrgh and kaldur is never going to be the same (i assume.  i mean, dr. light wasn't the same after he was mind wiped by zee).  maybe a break from her will lower my blood pressure. :/

and now i leave you with a song

so much for losing track of time :)

ALL THE SMALL THINGS

friday i had a lousy morning but a lovely evening.
got off work at the normal hour, went home to change then off to school.  failed a chemistry exam.  then i tended to my bacteria and did some chores at leahi for an hour.  then we had research meeting- which turned out to be last proof and look of the sacnas poster.  then we went back to campus for sacnas travel meeting (omg i am going to seattle in four days).  then i bussed it back to town.  had a snack then went to smiling devil for tattoo time!  i have no fresh ink photos cause i was up for 27 hours and looked like a hot mess. it was the 7 cups of coffee that kept me going.  le boyfriend worked a swing shift and finished up around 8pm.  next stop zippys!  i don't know why but this may be one of my favorite moments of us together.  there is something so content (just whelmed! haha) about sitting in a booth together on a friday night, eating diner food, and talking about our week.  - u -  he had chili dog and rice and an apple pie a la mode.  i had a fish sandwich and a cup of soup (wild rice and ham was so goood!  10x better than i thought it would be!  the ham gave it a yummy, smokey flavor) and an orange bang.  the table next to us was a group of band people and cheerleaders from the roosevelt football game.  it felt like a scene out of grease.

this morning i tried to get up for young justice but i was falling asleep while watching. :(  at least i am well rested for the chaos to come~ working and schooling up until the final hour before i leave for seattle.  and so much to do until then!  have to take care of some trip logistics and then print out business cards (they just sprang this on me on friday) and mini versions of our presentation!  i packed as much as i could today (so hard to pack for the cold when i am sweating buckets in my own house) and did some tidying while playing records in my room.

finally, i leave you with the last thing i listened to on the bus:

http://www.nerdist.com/2011/11/nerdist-podcast-139-neil-degrasse-tyson/

i wait impatiently for the equatorian movie, ascent of the cubes. ;)

hope everyone is feeling the aster this weekend.

LIVRE

AHAHAHAHAAAAA... it's almost friday and i didn't even answer last week's friday 5!
well, here it is, better late then never. >___<
answer them for yourself or see others' answers here: http://f.riday5.com/?p=691

be warned, before reading, i am a huge stephen king (sk) fan...
  1. What’s your favorite book you’ve had read to you? I sort of mean read aloud in person, as opposed to read aloud on a recording, but answer it however you want.
ok, off to a poor start... i don't recall any specific books being read to me.  i'm sure that's how i learned to read but i don't know of any stories.  i was always reading by myself. :/ also, i am a poor audio (aural?) learner.  i can't comprehend books on tape unless i'm reading along.  and while i admit i have gotten very deeply attached to listening to pod casts, i am constantly hitting the replay 30" button.  i find it helps to take notes while listening (can that get any nerdier?  i have to take notes while absorbing media in order to enjoy myself) and it's also nice to go back to thoughts that i scribbled.

  2. What book (or series of books) would you like to see turned into a film?
i sort of want to see a dark tower (sk) movie... and i sort of don't.  i don't want my fantasy of what the universe should look like be ruined by time constraints or poor CG.  now insomnia (sk), that would make an amazing film.  auras, people!  it can't get better than that!  i've mentioned wanting a GCPD tv show.  i'd like to see live demonstrations of the number devil- it would make a great kids' cartoon.  I'd also like to see Mary Roach hosting live versions of her non fiction books (stiff, bonk, spook, etc.).

  3. We often complain about movies not being as good as the books upon which they are based, but what’s a movie that was as good as (or better than) its book?
I have two actually!  The endings to The Mist (sk) and Watchmen were different from their written counterparts but they are perfect endings!!!
one more i need to mention: fight club.

  4. Songs often take us back to specific times in our lives, or remind us of specific people. What book does that for you, and what’s the explanation?
When my popo died i was reading 'salems lot (sk).  i don't associate the book with the emotional sadness of death just the particular time.  my sister was sharing my room while my relatives stayed in our house.  and my bed was in a different arrangement in my room- my head was directly under the window.  what i remember most about this- my first time- reading this book was it was also the first (and so far only) time i was SCARED while reading a book.  i just kept thinking, ONCE YOU INVITE THEM IN, THEY CAN COME BACK ANYTIME THEY WANT.  and i couldn't see outside the window that was right above my head.  and i was just in a graveyard.  i just fucking couldn't sleep i was so afraid a vampire (let alone my vampire grandma) was scratching at my window.  i only have a screen and jalousies for fucks sake, you could slit that with a sharp fingernail (claw) or knife (fang)!  and how could i say no if they asked to come in?!  ahhhhhg!!!  i remember those hot, sleepless, anxiety ridden summer nights.  i always remember the strange, stomach sinking feeling.  i've reread 'salems lot several times since then.  and i don't get scared anymore.
... except for the part when the grave digger goes mad and digs up the coffin to shut the eyes of the dead little boy.  there is this small part of me that is scared, in a way that is not related to vampires or undead or fantasy, that thinks if i saw an open grave i might jump in.  i know, this sounds weird.  and i don't mean this in a suicidal way or anything.  i mean, i might just lose my wit and jump in just to see what its like!  am i alone on this?  i get like this with heights too.  i'm afraid i might just have a crazy thought of hey that doesn't look too high i wonder what would happen if i jumped off?  anyone else?  no?  ok, i'm going to shut up now.

  5. What book do you know well enough to quote from once in a while?
I quote from the dark tower series a lot.  A LOT.  sometimes i quote from insomnia (sk).  and i often think of richard feynman's exclamations in his autobiography, Surely your joking, Mr. Feynman; adventures of a curious character. for example: "MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" or "I WANT MY DOLLAR!" or  "DO YOU HAVE A MAP OF THE CAT?"
more book questions and reading suggestions please!  i love to read!

MOVIES I WANT TO SEE THAT I CAN'T FIND AT THE LIBRARY

I SAW THE DEVIL
foreign (korean?) film; a man gets revenge on significant others' kidnapping

THE RAID
indonesian film; raid of a mobster compound. just came out this year maybe it will go to the library later.

THE VANISHING
the american remake version, it is based on a swedish film.  saw it on HBO when i was in elementry school.  a man is searching for his abducted wife.  the scene that resonates with me after all these years is the crazy guy jumping off the roof of his house saying, "i wanted to do it just to see if i could make myself do it".

AIR DOLL
japanese film; modern day pinnoccio? it was at the HIFF last year.

in other news, i've been finding great music on PBS!!
you might be familliar with the SYMPHONY OF SCIENCE

well, the genius behind the series did an exclusive series for PBS:

Fred Rogers

Julia Child

Bob Ross

three characters that are dear to my childhood now continue to encourage my adult life. :)
