N O I R

heys!
friday5 time!  haven't done it in a while!
you can see others' answers or answer for yourself here: http://f.riday5.com/?p=714

  1. What’s your favorite black article of clothing?

everything i wear looks 100x better when i have black stockings or tights on!
but most of the time i'm just shorts and t-shirt girl.  here's an interesting shirt i own:

    bubble head
cotq, yeah!  support local bands! ♥ http://clonesofthequeen.com
  2. What’s the best black food?

    LICORICE, OF COURSE!
if you count beverages, i take my coffee black all the time too. it's the BEST way to take your coffee.  all the cream and sugar and syrup they add to fancy coffees tastes like dessert to me.  when i want coffee i only want coffee. ;)

  3. How did you pass the time during your most recent extended blackout (power outage)?

a transformer blew up outside my house recently!  it started leaking "oil" (but why would they need a hazmat team to clean "oil"?  i think something more suspicious was going on... like... alien tech... ) so the road was closed.  sucks living at the bottom of a one-lane-dead-end-street!  no one could go out or in.
first, i rummaged around for my propane lantern for later.  then i went around the house and unplugged appliances.
after that, nothing to do but wait it out.  i read a book on my front porch until it got too dark to see.
    then i took some pictures.

THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUTpower outages make nice dusk photos.  less light pollution. :)

THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT
and then i went to sleep since i had to work later that night.
  4. When did you last play blackjack?

i played black jack one year ago, with my family, at the laie beach house.
yes, i'm card obsessed but i don't play games much.  mostly just collecting interesting cards, practicing my flourishing, and dabbling in conjurring.

  5. What are some songs in your iTunes (or other media player) whose titles contain the word black?
here's the list in order by number of plays:
    black sheep - metric
    black satin - raveonettes
    black milk - massive attack
    black mirror - arcade fire
    supermassive black hole - muse
black wave/bad vibrations - arcade fire
black eyes (le castle vania remix) - snowden
up against (blackout) - taking back sunday
blood clots and black holes - thrice
all on black - alkaline trio
    the black box - philter
black tongue - yeah yeah yeahs
    black cloud - converge
paint it black - rolling stones
    righteous black - gauntlet hair
back in black (hives cover) - ac/dc
    black cadillacs - modest mouse
weightless is the new black (depression iv version) - saddest landscape
    blackout - allister
under the backlight - rilo kiley
piano black (ian o'brien remix) - seatbelts
blacktop cry - we're all broken
    black rosary - flowers forever
    black sheep - royal baths
    black rice - women
    black night - the dodos
welcome to the black parade - my chemical romance
well that was fun.  now i'm going to get dressed and bike down to ward.  meeting my research group for thanksgiving movie viewing.  skyfall!!!

COULD YOU FALL ASLEEP WITH A PANIC SWITCH

i didn't really want to get controversial in this blog but i could really use some support!

please note that all i say here is solely my opinion and does not reflect the opinion of the school i attend, lab i work for, and people i work with.

i only speak the truth.

KCC administration is evicting our research group from leahi hospital.  we will have no physical space to work out of, let alone just store everything we have in the lab!  besides glassware, pipettes, media, cultures and odds and ends, we have $$$$ of antibodies, antigens, serum, antibiotics, and other things that are stored in refrigerators and freezers that will have no place to go.

we were "temporarily" moved off campus to leahi hospital while renovations were taking place.  this was a big mess in itself but done is done, we moved over and have been working out of leahi for approximately a year.  no we are being told we have less than a month to move out because the space was given back to leahi.

we asked to keep it. we asked for a contingency plan.  we asked for help from UH and INBRE.  but it looks like all the negotiations are on KCC.  and we are getting no help from them.

never mind that we are the only local monoclonal center.
never mind that we bring in grant money to the entire campus; several hundred thousand dollars of grant money (not an exaggeration) over the last five years that get dispersed to the campus before we get a cut.
never mind that it's an opportunity to learn lab techniques and get interested in science.
never mind that we teach incoming college students through high school summer bridge programs.
never mind that we just won a national award less than a month ago for our research; the only community college, and with two posters (four students) out of 120 undergraduate awards, out of 2000+ participants.

never mind us.  because obviously we are not important.

i would also like to point out that another phd/md and his lab is supposed to move in to leahi with us.  and the campus knows about this and hasn't said anything.  all of his lab's stuff is in boxes with us also and there will be no place to put it.

i really feel like this is a big FUCK YOU from kcc.

after all our research work, after all my personal hours put in, after all the years my mentors have put in to fineness the research group into the amazing program it is... we get no respect.  while some students get paid out of grants, the work we do gets the grants.  there is no credit involved.  there is no extra credit involved.  research is just something we do because we want to do it.  we want to work, we want to be here. personally, the loss of the space will be the loss of research group and a huge personal devastation.  i'm talking, 4 hour experiments every two weeks for the last three years... absolutely meaningless to people who decide our fate.  they don't even know what we are doing here and don't care to hear it either.

and while i guess there are a few weeks (december 14!) for the administrators to change their minds and help us out, i don't have high hopes.  if they really make us move, i am quitting research because the campus doesn't deserve my time.  i will also consider quitting school because i already have an associates degree, a full time job and can get my MT certification without my bachelors degree from the AABB.  because frankly, i don't feel like the system deserves my money either.

sorry, this is sort of a rant but it's also a call for help.

what can i do to stop this?

we've talked about staying in the space until we are physically evicted but there's a fear leahi will change the locks or cut the electricity.
we've tried talking to UH but it looks like they have nothing to do with the situation anymore.  everything lies in the hands of KCC.
we've discussed bringing this to the attention of the newspaper... but i don't want to put the jobs of my mentors to be on the line.
would it be appropriate to bring this situation to the attention of a representative?  would they care?  i believe there is a government official investigating "wonder blunder" and i feel we are the problem of mishandled administration and funds (and also it's involving funding for an end product.  we make stuff- antibodies, to be exact- it's not just a bunch of donation money for a one night concert, as in the aforementioned scandal).

i really feel like something should be done about the situation but i don't know how and i don't want to risk the jobs of the people who have done so much for me.  the research group is a huge part of my education and has contributed to the way i go about my job and daily life.  i feel bad standing by and letting things fall apart!  research will come to a literal halt if we have no space to work in or access to lab equipment.  we are not theoretical scientist who scribble on black boards in lab coats like they show on tv.  we have ideas and then put it to the test by running experiments.  no lab = no refrigerators and incubators = no cells = no experiments can be run.  i suppose all good things come to an end but it's going to be an abrupt one that leaves many questions behind.

if i could talk face to face with the person behind our demise i would absolutely tell them i feel ignored and insulted (i don't know if i could bring myself to say 'fucked over' aloud).  i also want to ask them:

Could I be anything you want me to be?  Its always meant to be seen.
When you see yourself in a crowded room do your fingers itch, are you pistol-whipped? Will you step in line or release the glitch? Can you fall asleep with a panic switch...
