and now onwards to 2013!

yesterday i did some xmas shopping.  found something great for my workplace secret santa!  we have a $20 budget and i stumbled into a 40% sale at american eagle.  instead of assorted perfumed hand lotions or gift bag of arare i got a super cute purse, pair of socks and a tanktop for a loverly lady!  a super sweet xmas bundle, in my opinion. don't know how long the sale will last but it's a good deal if you are still gift hunting. :D  (apparently it's good online too...)
and if you are feeling generous to yerself, no problem with that either... heheheheh... i bought a colorblock dress (fyi, runs large) and ombre tights (been looking for a pair for a long time)!
now time for gift wrapping... my favorite holiday past time. fo reals.  something very zen about folding paper and making it look pretty.  i really like adding ribbon and making small paper fit perfectly around boxes.

i also attended our research meeting.  looks like we are staying put for now.  but possibly moving across the hallway later?  i'm not exactly thrilled by this- the labs across the hallway used to be BSL-3 labs and monkey rooms.  we are already BSL-2.  and for a little perspective, tuberculosis is considered BSL-2.  so we would be moving into a lab that used to process specimen that are WORSE THAN TUBERCULOSIS.  (eg: burkholderia) the rooms were "decontaminated" but i still feel paranoid.  i mean, this was the kind of lab where you'd have to wear the space suit looking things in order to go inside...  also, there are no water drainage pipes because they got cut when the outside of the building was renovated.  the worse part is there are no counters and benches.  it's like a room with a sink. there is no physical working space. :(  don't really know what the deal is going to be with that.  also, we'd have to see if the electrical outlets can handle our refrigerator and freezers. sigh, still a lot of logistics to figure out just fo moving across the hallway.
but here i am complaining when we still don't know for sure if we are moving or not. :/  i'd be happy with any definite answers right now.
also at our lab meeting, dr. wada, who will be joining us.  he's a fun, funny, humble, and incredibly smart doctor!  i've only met him once before but he's as awesome as i remember.  it will be great seeing him more often.  :)  sadly he is pulled into our location situation as he will physically have some lab work here, but he said something that i also personally stand by, "i would rather throw my lot in with you guys".  that pretty much sums up my feelings toward my entire micro research career under matt, alan, and dr. b.  guess we're all going down with the ship for now.

last night at work, very quiet.  so nice!  the whole week we were running from start to finish, last night was quiet between 2-3:30am and we also finished morning rounds by 7am. awesome!  since HMC closed (yeah, that long ago) we only finished morning rounds on time a handful of times.  i remember when the other hospitals were still open, i could finish rounds before 7 INCLUDING all the manual diffs if i was in heme or racking all the specimens if i was in chem.  by the time the day shift came in everything was cleared up! maybe my coworkers had that experience but personally, i haven't been able to clear *everything* from rounds since the other hospitals closed.  we've just been busy, in general.
i've noticed right before xmas outpatients are busy because everyone wants their blood test before they feast for the holiday, haha.  after new year, the inpatient gets busier because everyone is really sick- they were all hanging on for one last christmas with the family.
is that morbid?  sorry.  just an observation.

ok, i will do the friday5 tomorrow, now i'm off to leahi to turn off my plate reader and download my first genta-campy data, *squee* !  >w <  then a tiny nap and off to work.  here's hoping for another quiet night.

until next time, netizens!

TIME FLIES when you're having fun... or working hard.
last night at work was just one of "those nights" when you swipe in, do a bunch of things then look at the clock and it's almost time to swipe out.
with out getting into too many details,
  • we were working on a minimum crew: two techs (sheila in chemistry and myself in blood bank and hematology) and one phlebotomist.
  • there were two codes (super duper critical patients that take priority over the entire hospital)
  • i had to phlebotomize some one (since we have dedicated phlebs, i only get to draw people once a month or so.  but i still got the skillz)
  • there was computer down time that no one told us about (could have been worse but it's still a pain in the butt to change your work flow)
  • had some blood banking on a person with history of antibodies takes an extra 30 minutes to find compatible units
i just remember setting up a bunch of things, running some qc, then i went to the floors for the code then i came back to finish my blood banking and then sheila says "the 4am phleb called out sick".
"not a big deal", i tell her.  "i will pull the morning rounds [logs] at 3:30".  sheila tells me, not to worry because she pulled the logs already.
at first i was baffled.  it's kind of early to pull logs?
then i looked at the clock... it wasn't 3:30 it was 3:50am already!!
where did the night go?!  i swear i just clocked in...
after that, it was another nonstop 4 hours until i clocked out.  i only drank half my coffee!  i was kind of grouchy to the 6am-ers, sorry coworkers!
i like it when the shift goes by fast.  keeps your work exciting.

when i got home my dad made me breakfast (BACON!!!!!!!!!!), how nice!
i made up for my lack of coffee and then headed out to leahi.

ran a campy-genta experiment.  possibly the last... depending on what goes down in the next few days. seriously, we have no idea if we are staying or leaving the lab.  :(
2hrs infection. 2hrs gentamycin.
i was pretty tired doing a 4hrs experiment back to back from work.
but i am optimistic about the results.  if this experiment works... it's pretty much what we've been building up to for the last three years.  i mean, we didn't solve the great mystery of the world... let alone the great mystery of campylobacter.  but we have a protocol.  we have something awesome.  plate reader finishes it's cycles on saturday, i will let you know how things go.
also spent some time with my research group... eating lunch and playing halo 4.  a nice distraction after the exam stress is over.

napped on the bus and got home at 6pm.  and now i'm off to bed to do it all over again.
happy thursday!

for today's viewing pleasure: uncut cardistry.
i post a lot of my favorite cardistry videos... they have cool effects and edits... but here is pure, uncut cardistry.  unadulterated video that showcases the talent of the artist!!  i like music and great camera angles but i appreciate cardistry more when you take away the lights and fanfare and can still be amazed.

one handed shuffle= practiced for years and can do it one out of 50 tries.
those L cuts = my next challenge.
that anaconda = mind. blown.

* addenum:
last post i said the last first-read book i finished was The Stand (stephen king).  I completely forgot I also finished STIFF by mary roach.  i am still working on "At Home" by bill bryson.  i hope to complete it before the new year so i can start my dark tower cycle again.  ;)

my birthday was last week, and it came and went in a whirlwind.  so busy with last exams and then finals (i still have one more to take ughhh).  but it fell on my regular day off, so that was nice.  my neighborhoodie @yummiestars took me to sweet home cafe (omgsssss the fishballs and shave ice!) and we ate a lot of food. (- w -)  it was soooo good!  i have the best friends.
when i got home, i had a surprise from amazon (ok, not really a surprise seeing as i ordered it but the delivery date was a surprise), a rock band guitar!!  i have been tirelessly hunting down the instruments so i can have a full set at my house plus some replacement guitars for jj's house since we have been doing some hard core rocking as of late.  the guitar is a third party model and i noticed the buttons aren't as responsive as guitar hero guitars but it looks super sweet and all of the instruments are pretty hard to find now.  still looking for another guitar, the drum set and a mic- all used or new doesn't matter- if you know of any leads.  i've been losing all my ebay auctions for instruments (i haven't even bothered looking for rb1 &2 i figured i could find a used disc at game stop or somewhere and most people selling their instruments bundle it with the game) and have been wary to check out craigslist (not exactly comfortable meeting up with people i don't know) but it might be the only way, unless i buy all third party add ons (expensive).  but anyway i have a rockband guitar!!!  been playing some songs on rb3, fun fun.  can't wait for finals to finish then i can play more.
i am also dying to play halo 4.  didn't beat solo legendary yet so i have something to do over the winter break.

other xmas break plans:
- hike diamond head with my cousin (she is visiting from san jose for a week and staying at my house)
- spending time with le boyfriend (he hate my guts because of our reverse work schedule)
- bikeventure to see the city lights
- campy-genta research (if we don't get kicked out of our lab. this is still undecided.)
- pick up my comic books (a whole month of comics to retrieve, ahhhhh)
- bake christmas cakes and deliver them

looks like i'm working this christmas.  am slightly dissapoint.  but i had the last two christmases off so i don't really mind.

here's is the friday5 from last week, read others' answers or answer for yourself here: http://f.riday5.com/?p=720

  1. You know those delicatessens that name sandwiches after famous people? What would be the ingredients of the sandwich named after you?
molasses rye bread, mustard (yellow or granulated), swiss cheese, tomato, crispy bacon, spinach, corned beef.  pickle and olive on the side. with BAKED black pepper kettle chips (i swear, the best chips in the world and they are always sold out!!!!!!  i bought a case of it from whole foods the last time they had it and now they are all out again) and an ice cold coca cola or creme soda.
who wants to eat at my future restaurant? ;D
  2. What’s your favorite part of staying in a hotel?
COMING BACK AFTER A LONG DAY AND NOT SEEING ALL OF MY JUNK.  i really need to clean house.  clean house and throw everything out.
  3. What was the last book you read, and how was it?
i've recently reread Richard Feynman's autobiography and The Number Devil.  two of my all time favorites, both involving math (wtf).  last first-time read was The Stand which i finished in august.
  4. What’s something super-unhealthy you’ve recently eaten?
beef jerky.  ughhh, it's so full of salt but when you're hungry, sometimes a candy bar doesn't cut it.
funny side note: today i was studying with a friend and the lab manager came outside and saw us.  she gave us some encouraging remarks and said good luck and recommended we not take too much caffeine and get a snack before our final; specifically, carbs.  she said it's a nice slow energy and not a sugar rush.  she left and i turned to my friend who said, "let's go get a snack, what kind of carbs should we get".  at that point i knew i had gone off the deep end because when she asked me that question the first thing that popped in my head was POTATO.  bwahahahaa... no, not french fries.  just. a potato. it's a good thing i didn't say my thoughts out loud.  :/  why can't i think of something practical like crackers?  or out of all the uncooked produce you could eat, why not a banana?  LOL.  a POTATO.
  5. What do you do with all those Christmas cards with photos of friends and their kids?
sadly, i don't get many christmas cards.  and the family photo ones usually go into the trash on january 2.  BUT @XYNETHA HAS THE MOST ADORABLE CHRISTMAS FAMILY PHOTO CARD EVERRRRR this year and i don't think i can throw it out! /(* U*)/  stormy is so tiny cute and everyone looks so happy!  THANKYOUUUU @XYNETHA!!  instead of on my fridge it's pinned to my wall next to the drawing @valdezign sent me last christmas.

ok back to studying. :(

after several years, i updated the music in my music box (see left sidebar).  enjoy the todor k. and emily haines!  if you like the music, please support the artists and purchase the song on band camp (there's a link near the play button) only a few cents to own a masterpiece.  :)
one day i will make a real rotating playlist.  when i stop being lazy and can look up some code.
