R.I.P. G.R.

so how is everyone coping with the eminent loss of google reader?
i am mad.  and sad.  but mostly mad.  i was in deep... folders, tags, shares set up.  even my rss feeds had an rss feed- my starred items get sent to the feed and they pop up on the right panel on this blog so you can see things i've read and liked!  and soon it will be no more. :(
i've already decided i will move on and try something new.  since i am almost an exclusive opera user (90% opera, 9% safari for incompatible sites, 1% firefox for things requiring a microsoft browser) it was natural that i look to see if opera had any recommended extensions.  the first i saw was tiny tiny rss, but i'm not knowledgeable enough to use it. instead i went straight for the more obvious answer: send feeds to mail panel.  it was easy import/export, built into the browser, easy to set up, can use tags and folders. seems to fill the rss void so far.  however, there is no sharing function, no way to read from ipod touch/iphone, and i haven't figured all the key board short cuts yet.  i'll let you know if i'm still on the wagon in a week or so of using it.
since i won't be able to star items and share them any more, i've beefed up my delicious account so you can see my interests there.  (hey, remember when it used to be http://del.icio.us ?)
to eliminate redundancy, i'm also killing/boycotting my pinterest account; it was irritating anyway because you couldn't pin pages without photos and you couldn't pin the same link to multiple boards.  how stupid is that?!  i am fully back on delicious now and hope you will explore some of my interests.  i am going to do a tag clean up soon (many links are from 2007, 2008 and have underscores in the tags or need to be merged) and then i will really be in business.  if only there was a pinterest export tool like how google let me export my rss feeds...

WEEKEND ADVENTURES

athis weekend i played halo 4 avec mes amis.  i'm several levels ahead but this was the first time for my pals.  they are really hooked now and hopefully we will have a little consistent gaming. :)  it was also one of the few times jo has picked up a first person shooter and is still figuring out all the different weapons.  she's doing good and it will be nice to have more girl power on the team! :D

we had a shave ice break at shimazu store and i have to share the pictures!

share

it feels good to get out of my black and white phase, finally.  :3 most of the pictures are over exposed and crazy saturated. OTL  spending a lot of time in a b&w frame of mind or shooting low light indoors, i think i forgot how to shoot in color properly. :/
PS, the shave ice was really good.  recommending flavors: longan & green milk tea royale

now for some analog news,
i finished reading Bonk by mary roach!

i enjoyed Stiff very much (in fact, i enjoyed it more... but just because i'd rather talk about dead people than sex.  is that weird?) and thought i'd go for another scientific-comedy.  bonk doesn't disappoint, many useful facts about sex and also many facts about sex that i won't get to use- mainly because it explains how certain research was done or a surgical procedure takes place.  yes, you heard right.  this is a book about sex- so not for the extremely prudish- but it's not at all erotic.  it's about the science of studying this slightly taboo field.
personally, i had a hard time finishing this because i read in my spare moments- often in public, while waiting on the bus or the grocery line and you know... people often ask what you are reading... and i have to tell them "it's a book about sex" and then they look away... so i decided it was best to read at home.  later this month i will pick up her newest book [from the library], packing for mars.
now i am working on microcosm by carl zimmer.
another science subject, another author i discovered from a magazine (actually, i first read carl zimmer in Discover magazine, ha!  but you can also find him in wired).  haven't gotten too far in, but i've found a few gems already:

"Bacterial viruses make themselves known by the bacteria they destroy, as a small boy announces his presence when a piece of cake disappears."
- Max Delbrück

REMEMBER

one of the most vivid months of march i recall is march 2010.
i remember so many details of that month, i am surprised!  i suppose that means it was an important milestone in my life, although why that month and not any other parts of that year is a mystery to me.

some things that come to mind:
  • my parents were in california for a week, just me and wild_twinkies at home together
  • i made my own corned beef brisket for st. patrick's day... and subsequently ate corned beef sandwiches every day for lunch the rest of the week
    • i remember the corned beef because the person who was training me was saying this was her first time making corned beef in her whole life!
  • i had to catch the first AM bus (4:30) to get to dole cannery on time.  it was nice to see the same people every day.  plus it was my favorite bus driver (i see him at 9:40am now)- the cheerful, friendliest bus driver!  he waits for people, he says good morning and "have a nice day at work" to every one.  he brings news paper for the riders.
  • a man with active TB was walking around in public because he left the hospital against medical advice.  (see, this is pretty random but i remember this story as clearly as if it was yesterday)
    • my trainer was reading this in the paper to us during lunch.
    • the man was later found at ala moana beach park and treated.
      • he had active TB but in his abdomen- not in the lungs.
      • the hospital he left was Leahi- some one had seen him on the number 3 bus wearing a face mask (not an N-94) and i had that cartoon look of a person gulping.  my brain was racing through my mental filing cabinet to see if i had ridden the bus recently with a face masked person or if i had passed any one at research meeting with a mask on...
  • Metric album Fantasies had just come out
    • every morning i would wake up to Front Row
  • walking to the bus stop every day i would listen to the song Life Magazine by Cold Cave
  • i had a pink pen that had three stylus in it: red ink, black ink, blue ink, mechanical pencil.  i don't know where that pen went, i might use it now if i could find it....
  • i still had my diagonal hair cut.
    • i would keep it until december- when Tron Legacy came out.  then i saw Quorra stole my hair cut and i HAD to change it. i am still grumpy about this.  she practically stole my whole look! even my love of adventure stories and hot guys who work on computers! :(
    • what i really miss the most is my green hair!  had to color it a "natural" color before i went into the real work force.  haven't had any interesting, fun colors since. :(
  • i went to watch a horror movie with my classmates- it was fun because for a year, we worked together, in close quarters, every day in every class.  then we went off to do our clinicals at different sites and didn't see each other any more.  even now, i feel like we bonded a lot in class and am disappointed we don't see each other much any more.
  • we made our first custom heroquest boards
  • i briefly met a resident, Dr. Kodama, who was also doing a round through micro with Dr. Bankowski.  i always hoped to run into him later because he seemed nice.
  • i encountered an unusual clinical specimen, Bordetella petrii.
  • attended one of the most awkward and reluctant family reunions. i played scrabble on the beach and didn't socialize much with my condescending distant relatives.
  • still shooting a lot of film, my lomo site was really active.
  • fall asleep every night at 8pm (i had to get up super early, remember?) to Lali Puna.

LIGNES

has it been a week?  here's the friday5 again!
answer for yourself or see others' answers here: http://f.riday5.com/?p=764

  1. What’s the longest line you’ve ever stood in?
waiting to get in to TBS concert! we were pretty close, decided to check if our tickets were at will call, they said yes but we had to wait in line!  got back in line... at the end. :(
totally worth it though.  best concert i attended. ♡
  2. When did you have the most fun waiting in line?
black friday with yummiestars!  one of the first all nighters i pulled in my life!  unbeknownst to me, the first of many years of all nighters i would have. ;)
  3. What line, no matter how long or short it is, always drives you crazy?
they should have a separate, express line at the grocery store for people buying ice cream!
  4. When did you last behave in a manner that was over the line?
one time at work, i was having trouble with the coulter LH not advancing racks.  our QC is dependent on a specifically barcoded rack so i couldn't run the QC.  i called tech services and they said a part needed changing and they would send someone in the morning.  in the mean time, i ran our back up machine and wrote a mailbox to the other hematologist explaining what happened.  i also attempted to run the QC manually (with out the special rack) but the data was not going in to the QC folder.
the next night, the day shift tech had written me... CCed to the entire department that i should not have left the QC un-done and next time i should have run it in the manual mode and typed in such and such ID number so that it goes in the QC folder and the machine is still usable in the manual mode...
i was so mad!  i did everything i could think of and i had a contingency plan (use the back up) for AM rounds and i left appropriate notes to let everyone know the machine was not running, i looked in the SOP for instructions on entering QC data manually but it was not in there, and even scheduled an appointment for the service tech to come in to change the part in the morning!!
so i wrote back a mailbox, in all caps, CCed to the entire department: I AM SORRY I DID NOT KNOW HOW TO RUN THE QC IN MANUAL MODE, I DID WHAT I COULD TO MAKE THE DEPARTMENT READY FOR THE DAY TIME, I AM SORRY YOU WERE DISAPPOINTED.  YOUR INSTRUCTIONS WERE VERY HELPFUL AND NEXT TIME I WILL USE THIS INFORMATION.
immediately after i sent this sarcastic angry note... i regretted it.  i was sure i was going to be called by HR and talked to by the bosses... but!  the coworker i intended this message for did not take it as sarcasm!  she responded to me- i am glad i could be of some assistance, please let me know if you need more instruction in the future. 8'D  some how she didn't pick up on any of my wrath! this is a fortunate thing, seeing as i really enjoy having a job.
what did i learn from this?
STOP. CALM DOWN. THINK BEFORE YOU SEND.
  5. What are some lines of poetry you can recite from memory?

Not in cruelty, not in wrath
    The Reaper came today
An angel visited this gray path
    And took the cube away.
and now for a homophone!

in other news...

i recently read this article about flourishing vs. magic: http://visualmadness.com/articles/magic-no-magical-hell-yes/
and he mentions the riffle fan as a visually stunning effect.
which led me to this video, i saw on theCuso. years ago (fyi, featuring mr. cuso, dimitri arleri) but it disappeared shortly after it was posted!
it is back!  it's amazing!  here, watch:

2:41 riffle fan, amazeballs, right?!  i also love the 3:29 table spread to fan.  both simple looking enough but really beautiful.  (and if you try it, not so simple at first. deceptively, your left hand isn't moving...)

ok, that's all i got for now.
back to crunching campy stuff for the up coming poster season. X___X

T E L E

friday5 again!  answer for yourself or see others' answers here: http://f.riday5.com/?p=760

  1. Who’s the fastest talker you know?
    ???

  2. Who’s the most soft-spoken person you know?
my hearing got destroyed at concerts (HEY DID I MENTION I AM GOING TO SEE METRIC IN CONCERT!!!!!! MIGHT BE THE HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE, SO EXCITED FOR APRIL!!!!!!!!  BEEN IN A SUPER GOOD MOOD EVER SINCE I BOUGHT THE TICKETS!) and standing in fireworks,

    dusk
i also listen to podcasts on high volume while riding the bus, etc. so i have a hard time hearing people of certain tones and volumes.  especially on the phone.  i've been to the doctor and they don't think i have any deafness.  i just... have a hard time hearing certain people.  is that normal?  also, i'm chinese.  i grew up listening to people yelling at me or talking to me while sounding like they are yelling!  haha.
silence is such a stoic and powerful trait.  i tend to be on the more boisterous side but i am making conscious efforts to lower my volume, sorry!

  3. What are some words you know from a language you don’t speak?
I know some french but my grammar is so bad.  how about a few interesting idioms instead?  i use these with @wild_twinkies

    mort de rire

... don't really know anyone else who knows french well enough to use slang and also wade through my mushy sentence structure. :P
The french word for "chopsticks" is "baguettes"!
some people like to use abbreviations when texting.  i'm sure you know OMG, LOL, WTF... ok, how about in french?
"i bought" = "j'ai acheté" = GHT  if you say the letters in french it phonetically sounds like that phrase.  (pronounced "jay" "aush" "tay")
"are you busy" = "t'es ocupée" = TOQP (pronounced "tay" "oh" "cue" "pay")
    "someone" = "quelqu'un" = QQN
    "sorry" = "desolée" = DSL
interestingly, if you put abbreviations in google translate sometimes it will also show the slang translation!  for example, i was trying to see if there was an alternate definition for "mort de rire" besides the literal "die of laughing".  if you put the slang MDR it translates to ROFL! heheheheee...

  4. To whom did you last speak your own name?
a 4th floor nurse when i called a critical during AM rounds.  i get so irritated when people (mostly at work) answer the phone with just "hello". i try assume the other party does not have caller ID and respond with "hi, this is C from the lab" or "laboratory, this is C".  even if i call (or text!) a person whom i don't normally contact i start with "hi, this is C" just as a reminder.
and now for additional laughs, if you call me when i'm sleeping or if i've just left work, i might answer my cell or house phone with a "lab, this is C" to the surprise of the contacting party!

  5. If everyone had to be a national spokesperson for some cause, what would be yours?
ANTI NAIL BITING and INCREASED HAND WASHING.
also, please stop honking at me to move aside for you (you, car drivers, you) when i'm on a bike!  i see you, i hear you, and i will let your impatient ass pass when it's safe for me to get closer to the sidewalk!  >:U

yesterday i spent the day with le boyfriend.  we stayed indoors mostly because the rain has returned.  he bought me borderlands 2!! i was playing on ps3 because he already unlocked the mechromancer character but i will resume on my xbox (going to make a siren again) if anyone wants to join me...
wild_twinkies likes to play halo so i am waiting for her so we can finish the second episode pack together.  i think we have two left?  she is a night sleeper and works/schools during the day so we don't hang out together even though we are sisters and live in the same house!  (and if you are wondering how i manage to have a boyfriend too?  well, he is perpetually mad at me and deserves some kind of medal.)

i want to share a bunch of music instead of just one song today!
i've mentioned on here [a long time ago] Boy Who Cried Wolf by Futures:

i might have even mentioned that they might have an EP, Karma Satellite, of acoustic tunes.  yesterday, out of the blue, i decided to see if said album was available on itunes.  to my surprise (ok, not that great of a surprise because i haven't checked in a few years) they have karma satellite AND a full length, The Karma Album!  previously, their first album, The Holiday, couldn't be bought on itunes at all.  now, all three can be found there!   but i recommend just getting the newest, The Karma Album, because it includes the songs from The Holiday.  Support Futures, they are awesome!!!  and if you fancy physical media or tees to proclaim your love of good music, here's the official store site: http://futuresmerch.bigcartel.com/

boy who cried wolf is one of my top plays and the new album is even listed as an itunes best of 2012, so i don't know how i missed the new release!  better late than never, i suppose.

i recommend: Islands in the Sea

and Start a Fire:

this week, i have three top songs:

heard this on the radio and had to have it: Trojans | Atlas Genius
super fun music!  makes me smile.
i also have an acoustic version from a silversun pickups tour ep (free!  download here: http://silversunpickups.com/2012/09/free-tour-ep-2/ ), but i don't like it as much as the radio edit.  (would have killed to go to the concert though- sspu and sviib in one night?! *swoon* )

been listening to this on the bus home from work: You, Me & the Violence | Birds in a Row
morning rounds gets me all riled up, have to listen to angry music!  i really like the discernible "IT'S ONLY YOU... ME... AND......... THE VIOLENCE" in the middle of the song.  so powerful.

more angry music!  passed this album to my research partner and Chelsea Smile | Bring Me The Horizon got bumped up in my itunes "recently played" playlist so i've been listening to it a bit lately. the lines are so catchy!
i'd like to note, this is the first time i've looked up the music video and... this is not what i thought this song was about! XD

phew, a long post, sorry!
that's all for now!
