ahoy!  i'm back in warm hawaii.
before i go back to my regular blabbering, a few more notes from my traipse to the mountains:

^ i love mexican food and i think i could eat at chipotle everyday.

^ besides TWiV, i went to the taping of TWiM!  very entertaining and informative, more episodes here: you can also subscribe via itunes- very handy!- if you do the ipod thing.  this episode there was discussion on research integrity (falsifying data and retracting papers, oh my!), eye infections (they made contact lens for rats!), legionella (stay away from grocery store produce misters), and CRISPR found in a phage (cholera [bacteria] are smart, but are the phage [virus] getting smarter?!).

^ my poster, all set up!  the fruits of my labor, finally in print and on display, makes me so happy. :)  i had really great response from other scientists.  there is much more work to be done and all the comments and critique will help.  i'm very flattered to have been asked "and when are you publishing?" but in truth... i am not sure when and if that will happen.  i'm just a community college student...

that's all i got from the ipod, i might have one more conference post with the 5d pictures.  hope you don't mind!

Here I am at the taping if This Week in Virology:

As you can see I'm at bit early and that's how I managed this photo.
and here are some things for you to click on:

Do you listen to the TWiV podcast?  Very interesting, geared toward scientists but you'll still be able to follow along if you don't have a lot of background (believe me, i don't know anything about viruses).  I also recommend This week in Microbiology for more general updates... they talk about pathogens and epi outbreaks so maybe a little more relevant if you are feeling clueless about viruses.  in fact, i recant my previous recommendation- if you have very little or no micro background TWiM is probably better than TWiV because they really breakdown topics and give background info where as TWiV operates under the premise that you know, for example what an siRNA is or types of virus envelopes etc.
When I listen to podcasts, I usually go for topics less academically inclined- I spend 75% of my day thinking about science so I like light hearted... No not even light hearted but, full on comedic... Topics. (no offense to roosterteeth, but your biology and clinical pathology sections are usually erroneous!  i love you anyway... the wrongness makes it funnier!)  Nonetheless, TWiV and TWiM are still in my podcast subscriptions and recommend to all my favorite paranoid germophobes and science interest friends for the latest microbe news.  there is also a TWiP about parasites but i haven't touched it at all since i don't have much interest in parasites.

Hey!  I'm here!

In Denver for the microbiology meeting!
Have I been mentioning it too much? It's because I was excited; now I'm here and I'm still excited! :) so much to do and so little time.
Sad thing is you can't take photo or video at any if the sessions so I've opted not to carry my 5d to the convention center.  So if I have any impromptu after-session adventures, you'll have to suffer my lousy iPod pictures. :P

But hey, how about some good news! Thanks to the foresight of the people making travel arrangements for me, the convention center is on the same street as my hotel, just a few blocks away.  And  once I arrived, I was happily surprised to see bike share EVERYWHERE! in town.  I tried it out this morning and its quite handy. The bikes themselves... -__-  I guess I am too used to my single speed. The "B-cycle" bikes are so heavy!! Even my white giant and my giant mountain (twinkie's green bike) is lighter.  Also it has a basket, which I thought would be handy, but is very heavy making me a bit wobbly on the first go (policeman standing at the corner looked worried).  Also I was wearing a dress. And I had a messenger bag. And I only had one cup of coffee and the sidewalk I'd the same color as the street and there are light rail tracks.  *disgruntled*
BUT, IT ONLY TAKES ONE TRY TO GET USED TO IT.  wore my bag like normal instead of using the basket, undid the bottom button of my dress (how scandalous!), lowered the seat so my center of balance was better (I guess when the seat is higher I'm more forward?), and took off!  Second time's a charm!  The price is unbeatable- $8 for 24hrs for rides under 30 min- and it's very convenient with stations all over.  Will definitely use it to explore around town!  Just have to figure out which are the one way streets (it's like Waikiki combined with downtown here).
We need one at home!

here's my friday5.  see others' answers or answer for yourself here:

  1. The motto of the Brownies is “Lend a hand.” If this were the personal motto of someone you know, who would it be?

my former coworker, Mike L., one of the hardest working people i know and would help out in any section if you needed help... and always with a good attitude!  i never forget those who lend a hand... i miss his bring it on battle cry!

  2. The motto of the Olympic Games is “Citius, Altius, Fortius” (“Higher, Faster, Stronger”). If this were the personal motto of someone you know, who would it be?

    micon g.
micon!!!!^ congrats on your $30k scholarship, you've really earned it!!

    paige t.
golden gal^ this little chica is a soccer and cross country star already... not to mention straight As!

  3. I don’t think it’s a motto, but Apple, Inc.’s tagline for some time has been “Think different.” Grammatical iffiness aside, if this were the personal motto of someone you know, who would it be?
    sam m.

^ our last picture together was 2010, it's been too long!

  4. Here are some food-related marketing slogans: “The incredible, edible egg.” “Beef: It’s what’s for dinner.” “Got milk?” What would be a cool marketing slogan for something you’ve eaten in the past twenty-four hours that doesn’t already have one?
i've heard recently from antony bourdain "food is feces in waiting".  i love that!  molecular gastronomy... it's cool, it's neat.  gold leaf and sculpted chocolates.  foams and flavored dusts.  it's all novel and luxurious... but in the end... it's still food.  food is feces in waiting.  so cut the B.S. and just give me something delicious.
recently, i haven't had an lakerol salmiak (or any other flavor of lakerol, for that matter) because it's hard to come by in hawaii.  but i remember when i first had lakerol salvi and i began to hunt for the other flavors, i came across this blog and his description- which is spot on- never left me.

These things would probably be quite good for you if you are an oral masochist with hypertension. With regard to its taste-appeal, possibly the same effect is at play here as with American salt water taffy, but Salmiak Liquorice is the very antithesis of salt water taffy – a dark, introverted, miserable Ingmar-Bermanesque plague victim to the American product’s blue-eyed farm boy.
Eventually, sadly, the liquorice softens and melts away; your tongue is left moderately darker. Your breath smells faintly like floor wax, and you feel like something is missing from your life. …and then you want another one.

  5. Here is a very long list of cool Latin phrases. Which will you adopt as your personal motto for the upcoming week?
booooo, scrivener!  you already picked my favorite- ad astra per alia porci- which is the motto of john steinbeck (to the stars on the wings of a pig... and he also had a little logo of "pigasus".  i also happen to know that he considered himself a "lumbering soul trying to fly").  after that, i usually defer to carpe noctem (not only because of my work but i think of it as meaning to make use of ALL of your time, not just the day!) or cerca trova (because if you want to find what you are looking for... you must seek it for yourself!).  but since i have been presented with such a long, lovely list, full of phrases i've never heard of i will pick something totally new to me:
    scio me nihil scire

and now off to colorado to hang out with microbiologists, brb!

I KNO...

here's my friday5.  see other's answers or answer for yourself here:

  1. What’s something you know about constellations?
these aren't random holes, they make up a wearable constellation!

    get one on

  2. What’s something you know about bugs?
many of them emit phenols as a defense mechanism.

  3. What’s something you know about a car’s engine?
people who build or restore custom classic cars like to use "hemi" engine.  (i get all my car knowledge from TV, ok?)  they are internal combustion engines that are very loud but make you go really fast.  or something like that.  i guess they will be out of favor soon because they use a lot of gas.

  4. What’s something you know about wine or beer?
beer is made with the help of yeast, Sacchromyces cerevisea.  congratulations, home brewers.  you are a microbiologist!

  5. What’s something you know about the Pacific Ocean?
the pacific ocean contains the marianas trench.  it is the deepest part of the pacific ocean, over 10,000m i believe.

obviously, i don't know much about anything.

but i know.... nothing ever keeps us safe for sure...

here's my friday5.  answer for yourself or see others' answers here:

  • What are you like when you are very nervous?
sometimes i'm not feeling nervous- in my mind- but i will uncontrollably start quivering.  must be adrenaline! nervous seems like a negative word, i like the term "nerves"- as in excitement and anticipation- better.

  • How do you deal with nervousness, especially nervousness about something that’s going to happen several days later?
i will rephrase this question to "how do you get up and face the world each day?"
i believe the entire world is after me and i must conquer them with my bad-ass attitude because i'm awesome.  it's like a game and you have to fight to win!

  • In what circumstance are most people nervous, but not you?
most people hate presentations and public speaking.  i really don't mind. i feel confident enough in my skills of B.S. and persuasion that a misstep... could never be as bad as you think.  not that it happens a lot.  i mentally go over presentations in my mind- almost like a little story- many, many, many times before the real thing.

  • What conditions seem to be fine for most people but make you feel nervous?
so... i really feel uncomfortable talking on the phone.  as long as i can remember.  something about not seeing the other party's face combined with not knowing how they will respond to me is unsettling.  also, i remember learning before i even went to preschool how to pick up the phone and dial 9-1-1 in case of an emergency and it established a "PHONE = EMERGENCY = DANGER" kind of feeling. :/  thanks mom.
i feel less nervous about public speaking because you are mostly talking AT people as opposed to conversations where you are talking WITH people.

  • When did you last feel nervous about something that turned out completely fine?
hey! our fusion went well!  took... a bit longer than expected and i had a mini methanol fire (quickly extinguished with some wet paper towels, not a huge problem) but everything seemed ok.  i looked at the monoclonals today and there are no contamination and i can start to see little cell colonies growing.  i was so worried i was going to contaminate because the water bath is a little gross looking and i use the same hood/multi channel pipette for campy work.  but it was fine!  also worried i added the PEG too fast but we shall see if the fusion worked in a few days when we really look at the plates and start to assay them.
