/( > u <)/

yesterday was so awesome.

1. tues night/weds morning was the first in a long time that everything went ok.  after the network outage fiasco, then the water, then the chemistry "wash valve 2" error, then the over time i put in, and just the general busy period... it was amazing that everything went ok!  i even had daily AND weekly maintenance to do and i didn't care, because i was so glad to not have any unexpected errors!  oh, and also i had to recalibrate one of our drugs (i was in chemistry, btw) and i still was unphased.  the last two weeks of work was really the shittiest time... everyday i'd have to clock in and go "what's broken or what did we run out of?".  so everything is back to normal now and i was in a super good mood when i got off in the morning.

2. we had a super heavy morning rounds but because everything was in good order we finished morning rounds on time!  i set my am relief crew up for success and clocked out exactly on time and caught the earlier bus home! so i got home 15' earlier!  awesome.  this let me study for ochem quiz 15' extra minutes...

3. i ended up studying 30' extra minutes and was so convinced i was going to be late for class!!! i got on a later bus than usual.  so i got on a *different* transfer bus in downtown than usual... and some how i got to school *EARLIER* than if i had taken the earlier bus from home?!  i don't really know how this is even possible!?!!  but i will test this out again and if it works, i can leave the house 15' later and still get to class on time!

4. i was already in a good mood. and i studied. so i aced that ochem quiz! IN YOUR FACE DIELS ALDER REACTION!!1!!!1!1!!!!!

diels-alder I: mechanism:

5. i treated myself to lunch at 220 grille. i had the braised short ribs.  - w - soooooo delicious!  a good size portion of meat that was fork tender.  had a demi-glaze on the meat (the description says bernaise sauce but it was most definitely NOT a bernaise sauce.  maybe the description is reffering to the sauce on the mash potatoes?); an asparagus, carrot, hamakua mushroom sautee; and kale and bacon mashed potatoes.  for $8 you can't go wrong.  it was so good, i would have paid more than $8 for this in a real restaurant.  props to the students who prepared it, so delicious!!!!  i always encourage people to eat at 220:
  • it helps the culinary students
  • the food is fucking delicious
  • you don't have to dress up like at ka'ikena dining room (but the food at ka'ikena is also amazeballs and if you ever get a chance to go down there... esp for the dessert buffet on friday nights...)
  • good portions and good prices
my recommendations: calamari steaks (i eat that at least once every semester), chocolate flourless cake (my friend eats one everyday. literally, every day.  she has a standing order.), and bbq pork sliders.  menu can be found online, make plans because they are only open for 1º45' tues-fri!

6. went up to leahi after lunch.  had a good training session with the new recruits.  hopefully i can pass off some experiment duties so i'm not in the lab 5x a week.  then took care of some business i've been putting off for a while- picked up new bus pass, talked with my research professors (came to some constructive conclusions), & checked on my inbre status.

7. on hte bus home, i txt my sister to see if she still wanted to meet me at ala moana but she said no. when i got home, i decided not to waste my energy and happiness high so i went for a bike ride around pauoa valley.  :)

8. i got home and was approaching my 21st hour of wakefulness.  decided to make good on my promise to not stay up for 24º again since i was did almot everything i wanted to do today... when @yummiestars sent me a message!  she was going to ala moana!!  yey girls night out and i get to go shopping- the one thing i didn't accomplish today!  it was a serendipitous excursion.  i found some way cool boots for $15, nike shoes for $30 and a cute tiny necklace for $3.  don't judge me. shopping is my weakness. -__-

nike pocket runner

9. and then we got $1 ice cream cones form mcdonalds. best. dinner. ever.

10. got home and crashed after the best day ever. :D

so much for new year resolutions.
after failing 2012, i decided this year i would not stay up more than 24 hours again!  seems bad for your health- and bad for your temper, haha.  but here we are, not even past the first month.  on friday i was in the waking world for 29 turns of the clock!  disappointed.  i guess there's always next year.
luckily it's the weekend and i was able to catch up with 6 luxurious hours in my bed, under a blanket, dead to the world.  :)
saturday and sunday i put in extra hours at work, covering for a coworker.  i don't really mind, it's more interesting when you get to do something out of the normal routine, and it's better for sick people to stay home and recover instead of working and infecting the world.  only problem was... i was tired!  i think this might be the first time since starting night shift (over two years ago) that i've been tired while at work.  i was fighting with every nerve in my body to keep my eye balls open- pulled so many pending logs because i was paranoid i would miss a test from lack of attention!  also, i ended up having to do phlebotomy for a few hours... and i haven't drawn blood in several weeks!  luckily for my victims- uhhh... i mean patients- i didn't have any misses.  got 4 sets of blood cultures and several other routine draws.  hell yeah, so proud of myself!  i was so excited and relieved when i saw the blood coming out, haha.  i always worry if i don't do phlebotomy as often i won't be able to do it anymore.

here's a video i found about blood cultures (there is veinipuncture involved so don't watch if you're squeemish about needles) so you can see why i was somewhat apprehensive about drawing them.  two sets means two seperate draws (which doesn't make people happy) and you have to use butterflies (which i hate) or syringe only- no straight needles.  and ea bottle is a minimum of 7ml so it takes a while to fill up...
anyway, if you are curious about the job of lab people or why certain tests are ordered click below!

two exciting things i did over the weekend:
1. finished reading MICRO by Michael Crichton
an exciting fiction about nano bots in hawaii!!

super fast read and very exciting, especially if you like hiking/nature. ;D
five star rating from me.  my other favorite Chrichton chronicles are: SPHERE and AIRFRAME.  i know, the popular ones are jurassic park and andromeda strain.  i think sphere and airframe are better. just sayin'.

2. ate dinner with le boyfriend at Olive Tree in kahala
falafel is yummmmmmmmmmmmmy!

i also played several hrs of minecraft but we won't mention that...

today i got off work, went straight to kcc.  powered down some ochem.  then bussed it home and took my bicycle out for short ride.  i went to longs, then the bank, and then the comic book store.  on my way home i ran into a friend!  he was unhappy with his job so he quit and will be starting his own business.  it's always nice to hear someone pursuing happiness. :)

i didn't bike with a camera today (was planning on hauling groceries back and didn't want to add to the weight) so here is a picture i took when i got home:

page turner

ok, sleep for me now.  staying up all night again. :)  see you at the lab!

ughhhhh... it's been officially a whole week of chaos at work.  •____•
last tuesday, mostly computer problems (stemming from certain damaged phone lines) that really slow down our work flow.  then on wednesday we had a water outage... chemistry analyzer had to be manually pumped with water to run tests.  thursday, more chemistry analyzer problems some kind of overflowed wash valve.  friday, another minor network outage while they repaired the fire-damage cable.  then, my first weekend off for this year! quite relaxing. :3  back to the grind on monday night... don't even remember what happened.  i got off work on tues morning and headed straight to leahi to do a 6hr campy experiment.  then on tuesday night, chemistry analyzer wasn't reading barcodes again (turned out they switched the network lines for an hour and forgot to tell us.)
last night, wednesday, a different person, in the same area, cut the same network cable as the one that was damaged last week. really guys?  again?  i'm pretty sure lasers were coming out of my eyes, i was so mad! luckily, the IT guys came to the rescue and we were only down for a few hours.  then we spent the next few hours cleaning up unresulted tests from the down time.  then a bleeder got transferred to us from another hospital; i ordered platelets and BBH accidentally switched my order with queen's!  haha.  would have worked out in my favor because i only needed one but a box arrived with six (!!!) but we switched orders with them and all was well.  :)
i'm working chemistry again tonight, makes me wonder what else could possibly go wrong. :X

on the other hand, working hard makes you appreciate your time off more!
nothing like a long night of work and coming home to your minecraft house and finding

a present in your living room!

or a cat on your roof!

or an enderman rearranging your cave!

ok, you can stop laughing now.  i know minecraft is a pretty nerd thing to talk about but it's like having a whole other world to live in and explore!  :)

what else did i do on my day off?  checked out this book about jello at the library.

watched new episodes of young justice (zatanna is back! death stroke is back! angry roy harper joins the team! lex luthor is going to... form The Outsiders? i'm calling it! heard here first, on the blog!)
discovered li'l gothams has a series (it's only 99¢ so no excuse in missing out in the batman cute overload!)

but the real highlight of my weekend was meeting the great and infamous sau!
he's super cool and has lots of interesting ideas!

cat's meow

he professed he doesn't really want pictures of himself so here's a picture of his awesome bicycle

really teally cool

which he let me ride

"it helps to pedal!"

but most of the time i had pained expressions and looked ridiculous

so i gave it back.
we went on a rapid jaunt to moiliili where i met another bicycling lad- the cycle manoa organizer! (i'm sorry, i don't recall your name)  together, they righted my bicycling wrongs (thanks for flipping my quick release to the correct side) before i departed.

thanks for the bikeventure, hope we can ride again some time!!

please vote for me in the chrome street photo contest?
or maybe submit an entry for yourself!  prize is a fuji xpro and some chrome gear. :D

快 ?

here's my friday5!  you can answer for yourself or see others' answers here: http://f.riday5.com/?p=736
  1. When did you last find yourself in a real hurry?
yesterday morning, i was helping my dad crunch some numbers- something we are both bad at.  percents? profits? food cost? portion size? augggggh... i thought we were going to spend 20' figuring out an equation to use, but we took 2º! i had to interrupt and ask him to drop me off at my lab meeting cuz i missed the bus and was about to be late...
  2. Often, when we’re in a hurry, we make stupid mistakes. What’s an example from your life that supports this, and what do you do to prevent such things from happening again?
have you ever seen the "gun" that puts the plastic tag strip into clothes?  we have one at work in blood bank, we put tags on units that are allocated to patients.  so, looking at the picture there is an obviously really pointy side... it punctures clothes (or in the case of blood bank, plastic) so that it can send the tag strip through.  and i remember on the first day my coworker was like, "here's how to use it, do it like this and watch out for your fingers... etc. etc."  and my thought was well, that thing is so huge and obvious how could you poke your finger with it?! pshhhh, sho does that?
flash forward a year or two and a doctor in ER is screaming though the phone DO YOU HAVE MY UNITS READY I NEED IT NAO KTHXBAI!!!!!!!!!1!11!!! i'm trying to hurry up and match all the right tags to the right unit numbers and fill out the paper work for emergency release and i'm tagging as fast as i can...
oopsies... i forgot that when you have a sharp pointy and you puncture something, you should not have your finger behind it...

  3. Why are some people so loud in places where quieter voices are usually appropriate, such as this cafe that’s closing in a couple of minutes, where these high-schoolers are being so loud it’s difficult for me to write these questions?
sometimes volume escalates as excitement escalates.

  4. How’s 2013 treating you so far?
i had a really great new year party which i will blog about next time...

  5. Are you more of a December person or a January person? What does this mean, anyway, and why are you whatever you are?
    i'd rather spend decemberunderground ;)

(and now you understand the origin of my december bunny... )

when was the last time you've had a night mare?
not just a troubling dream but a REAL nightmare.
i had one recently and it was the first in many years.
the kind where you wake up half screaming because your fate is hopeless in the dream world.
this is going to sound crazy but i had a dark tower related dream.
i was on my way to the dark tower!  i was walking (running?) a path on a cliff that went up to the sea shore.  most of the time trees blocked my view of the ocean but i could hear and smell it and knew i was close.  i knew it was the dark tower path because it was lined with roses.  the cliff declined to sea level and although it was light up ahead, it was getting darker around me, like i was exiting a cave.  but i was just along a path, not a cave so i turned around and the grim reaper was behind me.  couldn't see a face, just black black black robes of a figure that looked like a harry-potter-movie-dementor.  but i knew it was THE reaper.  he was after me because i wasn't supposed to reach the tower. (he didn't have to say anything... i just knew)  so i started running for real!  i kept along the path and it took me closer and closer to the ocean.  i saw a tiny wooden bridge ahead and  realized that i would be running forever and the only way to escape the reaper is to jump off the bridge and drown myself. so i jumped!  and then a man that looked like a lumber jack pulled me up.  he had a large scruffy beard and plaid shirt and golashes and a rain jacket over all of that.  actually, he looked more like the gorton's fisherman than a lumber jack.  but anyway he was saying don't go, they are about to "assign the parts".  all of a sudden i was treading water, just a bit off shore and there were other people in th water with me.  everyone had hershey's chocolate bars and were unwrapping them.  i unwrapped mine but instead of "hershey's" mine said "DANDELO". and i was yelling "NO, I CAN'T BE DANDELO!  I'M NOT DANDELO!"  everyone else started swimming back to shore- they were going to see the dark tower.  and the gorton's fisherman/lumberjack was just laughing at me.  i don't get to see the dark tower because i'm a bad person.  a current started picking up and i didn't want to be pulled out to sea so i started swimming back to shore but the reaper was back and i knew he would take me as soon as i made it to land.  i decided being a captive of the grim reaper would be worse than never seeing the tower so i decided to let the ocean carry me off but it was so choppy and starting to turn to night and get cold... and that's when i woke up.

i don't know what's crazier about this surreal dream-
1. it took place in only 30 real world minutes!
2. i actually dreamt of the grim reaper! :O  i know what he looks like and he's after me.
3. i dreamt of the dark tower! 8O i mean, i didn't see it, but i don't think there are many who have.
4. i AM dandelo? does that mean i'm the equivalent of pennywise/it ? :(

the least surprising part was the drowning part... for some reason when i dream of water 80% of the time i'm drowning in the dark.

the scariest part was the realization that i was being followed.  it's like i discovered that EVIL is real.  the reaper is not just a person... it's a force of evil and it wants to kidnap me. also if i'm dandelo, i'm a really bad person for lying and tricking people while i eat their emotions.

on the other hand, our house phone is out and it's quite relaxing.  no telemarketers and nosy relatives!  i hate people that call during the day, can never get straight sleep due to the crazy phone.  better enjoy the week [before the repairman shows up] of quiet while i can.

i had a little winter hiatus and then holiday season was a bit busy so i haven't had too much free time or blog time.  but i'd like to tell you about the movies i watched!  all available from the public library, so take advantage!  i'm linking the listings here, hope you have your card number memorized. :)

1. the avengers
yes, THE [marvel] AVENGERS!  was at the library, finally!  for a dollar, i watched it four times this break.  i love this movie.  i'm sure most people have seen this and don't need a synopsis... i just want to say i really enjoyed the action and the downtime between the action was good too.

2. hanna
i think of this as a subtle-psychedelic action movie.  and it might be because the soundtrack was by the chemical brothers.  the dvd has an alternate ending in the special features section, which i liked.  it could even be added on to the movie ending.  but i can also see why it was edited out because the different narration point of view was a little non-sequitur.

3. son of rambow
a great friendship story of two boys enamoured by the movie First Blood!  takes place in the 80s in europe. an unlikely friendship is formed by primary school kids since family support is lacking.  my description is very bad, this movie is really awesome and imaginative... especially if you are familiar with rambo!  i also really enjoyed the ending of this movie.  predictable? maybe yes... but it was the last little nuance that made it great.  when you're a kid, you don't hold grudges, you don't have a lot of regrets... you just look to the future.  and these kids, despite the huge fight they just had (and the calamity they survived) it was just business as usual at the end of the day.  it must be nice to have a simple life.

4. source code
a military technology allows time to be "reassigned" via a "source code".  a source code user tries to stop a terrorist attack by looking for clues in the source code's time zone... all the while learning more about the source code technology that the creators are keeping a secret.  a lot of people i know were calling this a B movie with many plot holes.  but i know something they don't... i read the dark tower... and i know there are other worlds than these.  if you are a tower junkie, you should definitely watch this and see how much of your dt knowledge can be applied to fill in the unexplained!

5. devil
a horror movie that takes place in an elevator!  people are always dissing M. Night Shyamalan, but i think he is quite creative!  i wasn't scared or grossed out (there is some blood involved) and i guess you should expect to be either or both when you are going to watch this genre of movie, but i liked the detective aspect of it and the mythology that went with it.  it has a hitchcock feeling.

i really wanted to watch looper, premium rush, prometheus, dark knight rises (again), detective dee, and total recall but didn't have the means or the time.  guess i'll have to wait until spring break.

i talk about music here quite a bit so i thought i'd share some favorites of the past year.  i went to my itunes library and filtered all the 2012 songs.  here are some of the ones with the most plays.  (and if you want to know what my all time most plays- from my entire library, just look to the left and visit my last.fm profile.)
