FUSE

i had eight bad days.

and i figure, most people have their own problems and dramas, no need to spread my sadness around.
whenever i can't contain the crazy anymore i use http://moodscope.com :) you get a hapiness percentage that you can view as a chart over time. you can also include comments, but i like to put words (tag style like in delicious) so i can compare words from highs abd lows. you can share your chart with friends/family, but i don't. i highly recommend for self help, and it's also free!

eventually, things blow over and now i'm back on track.

i even have something to look forward to; tomorrow i will perform voodoo magic, in scientific terms- a fusion! haha. in a fusion you mix together antibody producing cells with a cancer (and by proxy, immortal) cell to make an antibody producing cell that lives forever. :D the last fusion i did had 100 +/- positive clones so alan says i'm lucky! crossing my fingers for tomorrow's fusion to get lots of hits.

yesterday was my one day off but the storm warnings kept me indoors. i was in good spirits in any case- i caught up on sleep, did light yoga, watched a movie (cabin in the woods = thumbs down, glad i only spent a dollar), read some comics (TP Gates of Gotham = thumbs up, nice prelude to court of owls, more dustin nguyen art!), and my zoic pants came in the mail (more on this later).

my circadian rhythm permitted me to sleep at night (!!!) but i got up around 3am. i like the summer at 3am. it's not too hot. i like to lie down under my window and wait for the breeze to blow my black out curtains back, enough so i can start to see the sun come up. perfect with a cup of coffee and silversun pickups on my turntable. anyway, when i finally crawled out of bed i kept busy by cleaning the bathroom, watching the first three episdoes of dexter season 5, more yoga, and i made pasta. yes, i MADE the pasta! started with some flour and ended up with noodles in marinara sauce. :) they were ugly, but tasted ok. more on this later, too (i have pictures, don't worry)!

and now i must take a nap, have to work in a few hours.

these past few weeks were the saddest weeks... so let's call this the comeback...

FOND MELODIES

Here is my friday 5!  answer for yourself or see others' answers here:   http://f.riday5.com/?p=822
  1. What song, album, or artist, disliked by you in high school, now sounds pretty good?

this song makes me go "blehhh"

but it grows on me now.
still don't like panic at the disco but i don't mind the song any more.

  2. What specific high-school memory do you have of discovering some song, album, or artist you considered old?

@trix wrote in my year book i "should listen to muse".  so i did.
and then i bought this album as a graduation present to myself.

  3. What song or album best serves as the soundtrack for your senior year of high school? (bonus challenge: answer this question with a different song or album for each year of high school!)

    i have two songs:

"it's the year to be hated, so glad that we made it... "

this is also the last CD i bought before tower records closed.

  4. What’s a song, album, or artist from your high-school years you loved then (and might still love) but have great difficulty listening to now, and what’s the reason?

i think i just listened to the pillows too much.  still love 'em to death but for some reason i tend to skip it.

but, i still constantly think of this song when i think of my funny bunny:

  5. What song, album, or artist from your high-school years, seemingly forgotten nowadays, do you still listen to with fondness?

i love the raveonettes!  they are still rockin' this year but pretty in black doesn't get a lot of playtime anymore.

FREEWHEELING

Wednesday started out rough, had some instrument problems at work that I was resolving so I missed the bus home by a few minutes.  I walked home to find yummiestars on my porch. :D
We had coffee and watched some YouTube cat videos

then headed out on a bikeventure!  Yummiestars's bike is in ewa so she borrowed my pink bike, which needed some love anyway.  I took out my single speed and tested out strava for the first time. :)
We went to the Pearl Harbor bike trail and rode the length to the senbei factory.

I bought ginger flavor, very refreshing!

Yummiestars had poi and coconut flavor.

We were very happy.  They were packing up fortune cookies when we walked in and the whole place smelled of the sweet baking batter, not unlike waffle cones. (I should know, once upon a time I worked in an ice cream shop and made waffle cones every day. Ahhhh, memories...). It was like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. ;)

After the snack stop we biked back and contemplated lunch.  The single speed was fine, the strava was... Well, the app works but the GPS was funky.  :P

yeah, we totally rode across the "middle loch".  right through the water, good thing we had fenders. 8|  and i'm not sure what's going on at the beginning with all those squiggles, either.
Maybe it will work better in more urban areas... like, on the streets and stuff.

Yummiestars had some town side errands so we drove to Your Kitchen, in kaimuki, for lunch.  Pork bowl, yum! (I meant to take pictures but we were too excited to eat, haha.)

And then I went home, parked the bikes, had a shower, and then a nice restful slumber until I had to get up for work.
The end.

FAMILIAR FAMILY

OLD FRIENDS

instead of going straight for my annual reread of the dark tower series, i looked through my bookshelf for something i haven't picked up in a while.  east of eden is my favorite steinbeck book and one of my all time favorite books.  i love the characters.  i love the story.  i love how a complicated plot is approached so honestly.  everyone speaks so simply, so honest (even the liars, if that makes sense).  i don't know how many times i can't articulate how i feel where in this tale, steinbeck says it with ease.  i'm not much of a religious person but this story transcends the biblical story it refers to and is more about the story of our humanity.  i think i've read it cover to cover three or four times.  but i have tabs and notes on all the best parts so for now i'm just going over the most meaningful bits.

i've been in a thoughtful mood lately, maybe approaching an intersection along the road i'm traveling.  this seems like just the right bit of counsel. :)

FRUGAL

here's my friday5!  see others' answers or answer for yourself here: http://f.riday5.com/?p=819

  1. When you have to cut back on spending for a time, what are the niceties you're least likely to give up even though you could (or should)?

    COFFEE!!!!
i drink plain, hot, black coffee so i suppose it's not such a wallet stretch compared to "grande skim caramel whipped cream iced espresso whathaveyous".  but still... i could make a whole pot for pennies at home but if i'm out. and i want coffee. need coffee.  i will pay whatever price to get a cup of crack caffeine happiness.
    before coffee:

    PRE-COFFEEE
    ^ don't frak with me! 8|

    after coffee:

    hi
    ^ all smiles!

  2. In leaner times, what are your go-to “famine foods?”

i'm not sure how to answer this.
are you asking a) what do i eat during a famine?  or do you mean b) what was eaten during the famine that is now not a desirable thing to eat?
i guess i will have to answer both ways!

    a) rice is easily grown in bulk and i enjoy eating it.
i also support the use of genetically modified "golden" rice because it will help diminish poverty and decrease malnutrition from vitamin deficiency.  furthermore, i support the use of other genetically modified crops because of the many benefits it provides to our health and the environment (think about this: suppose you have a crop that is modified so that bugs don't like to eat it.  now you can grow it without pesticides!) and no noted ill effects on the person consuming it (if i hear any of you talking about eating a bunch of modified DNA oh no i am going to get cancer/turn into a mutant... i WILL punch you!).  i know this is a very controversial topic and i am ready to defend my position, or alternately hear your thoughts for the converse side, but right now there is so much negativity toward gm crops that is based on speculation or rumors and it is making me mad!  and before you start throwing rocks at me i would like to note that i am supporting the growth and consuming of gm crops.  i am NOT SUPPORTING companies that exploit patents on gm foods (yes, i'm looking at you, Monsanto!! *angry eyes*) nor do i believe there is no benefit- nutritionally or culturally of completely obliterating natural or heirloom crops.  in fact, farms that grow non-gm crops will become more valuable over time!  i guess what i'm trying to say here is "cool off, everybody!", we can live in harmony- if you don't want gm food, don't eat it!  you don't have to yell at others who see the benefits of growing, engineering or eating it.  and if you are one of those who are against gm foods because "it's not organic" or "it's less healthy" or "it was made in a lab" do some homework before you raise your voice, less you make a fool of yourself.  may i suggest some light reading on how gm foods saved hawaii's papaya industry or how golden rice is full of vitamin A?
did you lose interest in my blog yet?  haha.  i would just like to make one last note on this topic- recently the supreme court ruled that naturally occurring DNA sequences cannot be patented (YAAAAAAAAAAAAY!) but cDNA *can* be patented.  the future looks good for engineered crops.

    b) i feel like "famine" is referring to war time (for industrialized countries, like the US of A).  and a popular example is eating SPAM!  need i say more on the subject? :)

  3. How do you keep yourself amused or entertained in times requiring great frugality?

public library! it has free books. free CDs.  free air conditioning.  free WiFi.  free magazines.  free newspaper.  and the DVDs are $1 for 1 week. i love the library!HEADING EAST: Hawaii Kai Librarytoday's library haultoday's library hauldreams come true girl

  4. When was the last time you had to go into austerity mode?

this month is going to be a penny pinching month.  i just spent $$$ on re.member for my MLT certification.  also, i've returned from a vacation and a business trip (also read: here and here).  and i am going to have to pay for fall semester at UH next month.  :(  let the broke times begin!
  5. What’s a necessary expenditure others might consider an extravagance?

i buy sensodyne enamel building tooth paste and biolage naturalizing shampoo. i've bought these common toiletries for years for just a few bucks so initially $5 for toothpaste and $20 for shampoo was kind of a shock to me.  but once you use the good stuff... you can't go back!  pantene makes my hair heavy and it's not as soft.  and anything that says volumizing makes my hair go crazy!  i am hooked on biolage!  as for tooth care, i just assumed everybody felt tingling in their teeth when eating ice cream, like how everybody gets a brain freeze.  even cold water or soda hurt my teeth.  but one day the regular colgate was sold out so i bought toothpaste for sensitive teeth and it was a life changing day for me!  i can actually bite popsicles!

    vanilla popsicle
     :D
while not a "necessary expenditure", i do have a budget for comic books and playing cards.

    page turner

because... i like those things. :)  i used to have a budget for 35mm film but now i buy in bulk and keep it in the fridge so i have a stockpile and don't have to purchase as often.
