In the words of the great sage, L. Hasuko,
“Early is on time, on time is late, late is dead.”

But on Friday I had two instances where late was ok.

Recall, I just finished reading Doctor Sleep and saw NOS4A2 and decided to start it.  I had to put it down for a bit, had to study for some microbial pathogen exams.  (They went ok, by the way.  You can get rheumatic fever from a previous pharyngitis/throat Streptococci sp. infection but if you had a cutaneous/skin Strep infection you develop glomerulonephritis instead.  Take that, giant textbook!  I remember your tricks!) When I picked up NOS4A2 again, I was determined to push through to the end- only had ~800 pages on my ipod left.
This is where I made an amazing discovery, around the 2080th page!
Mr. Manx directly mentions the True Knot!

My mind exploded!

What are the chances that I pick up a book, without knowing anything about the plot or author (really, I saw it on the new arrivals shelf at the library, liked the cover, and took it home), and it references something from the book I just finished reading?!  I think I even mentioned in previous blargs and tweets how much of a good progression the stories made and they had some similar ideas.

Also, this story takes place in the same universe as all the shining which in turn binds it to the dark tower…

Dude.  There are other worlds than these.
i wonder now who the "walking backwards man" is... someone else from the shining?  i'll have to finish that book soon, too.

I was at work at the time and my expression was 8O
I wanted to shout to the world my amazing discovery!
Alas, no one in my immediate vicinity would have cared. 8|

I am so glad I read this book later than I hadoriginally intended!  I finished Doctor sleep first and wow!  I would not have made this connection, I wouldn’t have known about the True Knot!  even farther back in the blarg archives, I originally picked up this book around Christmas time (ha!) but was too swamped to read it.  When I finally did have time for pleasure reading, I picked Doctor Sleep first and well… the rest is history.

Anyway, I did push through to the end… had to finish it up on the bus and I don’t usually read on the bus, but I just had to get to the endingggggggggg…
It was just right.  Not too much (like harry potter, ugh, what a terrible ending.) and not a cliff hanger. And it wasn’t too sweet but it wasn’t a complete tragedy- the right hero gets to have their day. :_)
And then I read the author acknowledgments- because I always do (Mary Roach’s acknowledgments are particularly delightful)- and for the second time in less than 24 hours…

My brain exploded again!!

The author, Joe Hill has a Stephen King connection.

I had no idea. NO IDEA.  I was sitting on the bus with my jaw on the floor from the wonderful and amazing revelation. 8’D

Pick this read!  I highly recommend!

My second encounter with lateness was at the research lab.  This one is a bit more practical advice.

As you prob know, I do work on campy growth curves and we have this BOSS machine with all the bells and whistles that I owe much of my research to and it has very specific software that goes with it.  Maybe… 2 years ago we had a demo on how to use the software.  And all is well.  No real problems with the thing.  Usually grab all the raw data, feed it to excel and then crank out some graphs.

Sound about right?  New machine, new software = start with a tutorial

I have discovered today’s meeting, maybe our initial software tutorial was premature.  I met with the same service rep (awesome guy!  Very knowledgeable and has a personality- not like some of those dry people that walk you through tech support over the phone.), plus Dr. B- who was also present at our original mtg 2 years ago, and Alan, Thomas, and Dan who never had the original tutorial.  We got to see the slightly upgraded software and learned how to REALLY make use of some of the plate set up abilities.

I think before, we didn’t know what we really doing or how to even do growth curves.  But now that we know what we want to do and what we NEED in formatting the data, this meeting made a lot more sense.  The first meeting was too early- we didn’t know what questions to ask.  Now that we are a bit seasoned, we can ask how to get what we want. :)

so now, I’m finally handing off the bulk of the campy work to Dan and Dr. B (My workload is ridiculous, I can barely handle the sequencing/RFLP project on top of full time student and full time work.  No way in hell I can do 6hr invasion experiments every week plus data crunching too! @___@  I’m so lucky to have minions! ).

in other news...

My next read is nonfiction, Dreamland (finally getting to this one, very excited).  After that I will peruse Fishbones by Jisuk Cho.  I’ve been a long time Jisuk fan- I have a bunch of signed prints and even commissioned a sketch from him before!  I am excited to finally delve into the world of demos in this novel.  There is still time to back this on kickstarter if you want some extras like a signed print copy, a shirt, some post cards, book marker… get out there and support indie artists!

New to my music library,
  • All the Linkin Park CDs
    • I realized I was missing some songs from Meteora so I looked to see if it was at the public library- yes- and they also had ALL the other CDs so I thought, what the heck, I’ll borrow them all…
  • Jem- Finally Woken
    • Same deal, saw I was missing some songs so I borrowed the album to get the rest
  • Oblivion soundtrack
    • Great music for studying!  And susan sundfør is kind of amazing.  I want to get the collab song she did with royksopp
  • Phantogram- Voices
    • Because I suddenly noticed they were getting popular… found out they are in hunger game sound track?  It reminded me I meant to get the new album.  DOES NOT DISAPPOINT.  Just like Eyelid Movies, I can listen to it top to bottom, even back to back with Eyelid Movies and it sounds great.  Sounds like a singular narrative with their first album, I like that.
  • AFI- sing the sorrow
    • In preparation for next weekend’s concert, I went to dig up my AFI CDs and realized I didn’t have this one in my itunes…

Ok, that’s it for now,

Have a pleasant week.
