IN YOUR DREAMS YOU ARE AIMLESS

last week one of my favorite bands, THE RAVEONETTES, surprise released their album Pe'ahi!  i can't get their song SUMMER ENDS out of my head.  the melody and the lyrics are so perfect.

I felt like their album LUST LUST LUST (my favorite!) had a lot of ocean imagery.

but i would describe it as a dark watery scene instead of a calm and cool one.. like swimming in murky water at night.  The follow up to LUST was In and Out of Control which seemed happier to me.

a cynical happy (fuck suicide! boys who rape should all be destroyed!) but a happy, pop sound nonetheless.  Pe'ahi feels like a blend of the two.  i am getting a lot of ocean imagery again; it's like a hot, bright sunny day... but there's a black shadow swimming in the clear green water below you...
Sune confirmed it was named after Maui Jaws.  in that case, i'd say i like the dark side of hawaii.

what do you see when you hear?

NAUGHT

friday5 time.  answer for yourself or see others' answers here: http://f.riday5.com/?p=1045
What is something you have run out of?
liverwurst! :(  my daily sandwiches just because slightly less awesome.

What is something you don’t know anything about?
i don't know anything about mechanics and engines and cars and stuff.  you know how people can describe a noise their car makes or if it's leaking something from somewhere and then an expert knows exactly what the problem is?  this is amazing to me.  i have no idea where to even start when it comes to mechanics.  if it's not pedal powered, i don't know how to fix it, haha!

What is something that needs emptying?
thoughts before sleeping.

There are a lot of stylistic or slangy ways to say “zero.” Which are your favorite?
N A U G H T !

When did you last receive something free when you were expecting to pay for it?
my mom was begging me to take her back to verde because she loved the burritos the first time i took her there.  (apparently, one cannot eat burritos by oneself)  she bought me lunch and horchata even though i usually buy us lunch on saturdays. :9

MAKE NINE

Saturday was a lazy day.
I got home from work and took a nap then went to aerial. AmyzZ is back from vacation so we went over some sequence postures. Maybe we will have an extra practice again this week.  Regardless, you can find us doing regular yoga on Tuesday evening if you are so inclined to join us.  Unfortunately, Saturday aerial is closed for beginners for the foreseeable future but be on the lookout for Sunday special workshops if you are interested in relaxing, restorative or daring upside down aerial yoga. :)
I took the bus after class and met up with le boyfriend.  We in turn met up with D and Jojojo and Ken and Lin and Jet for dinner at sikdorak.  $20 all you can eat yakiniku meat? YES. I also realized they are open 24/7 (and byob, in case you are  wondering) so I might return on a night off if I'm craving hot tofu soup at 3am...
After dinner we watched paranormal activity 3.  Poor Randy! That scene is my favorite in the movie.  Also the sheet ghost reminded me of beetlejuice. I feel like watching that again.
(=゚ω゚)ノ

Sunday was a learning day.
I hung out with the bro force- we are making beer!  We brewed our first batch according to instructions provided by the supplier.  I don't know how people do this successfully without a tissue culture background!  So hard to keep everything sterile while working.  Good thing we had extra buckets for sanitizing as we went along.  The brewing wasn't too difficult, just time consuming.  I taught the guys how to play pai gow while we waited for the hops to boil and we looked up recipe modifications while we waited for the wort to cool down (maybe a molasses beer in our future?).  The yeast are doing their thing as I write this- I guess we will see the results in a few weeks.
When I got home my pops made me an epic sandwich including homemade pickled vegetables and leftover grilled chicken and liverwurst.
It was a good weekend.

RANDOM HILARIOUS JAPANESE GAME SHOW!

PS-
Destiny beta goes up to level 8 and they are teasing 2 subclasses under the class skill menu. I cannot buy this game when it comes out- its in the middle of fall semester and I'm going to be cracked out playing this game instead of studying! LOOKS SO AMAZING AHHHHHHHHGHGHH!

TILT A WHIRL

everything is out of waaaaaack from yesterday.i got up at a respectable hour to do chores then went to train at samadhi (we did this plank exercise with the foam rollers and even my nonexistent abs are hurting today).
then, instead of going to the micro lab, i went to the clinical lab.  yes, for the first time in five months i worked an evening shift.  the whole thing goes by fast because there is so much chaos!  but it was a good change of pace.  i found it amusing the newer hires from day shift were giving me a quizzical "who are you?" look and the regular days were giving me a "you're here early... WAIT WHAT TIME IS IT ANYWAY?" look.  one of the eve phlebs was asking me to speak to her in mandarin, her native language.  even after insisting i am so terrible at everything besides english (and at times even the english is bad) i cobbled together the sentences of my "my name is 黃秀英" and "i don't speak chinese language".  she laughed and said i sound like her young children.   U___U
eve shift finished at 11pm but now i'm feeling so awake since i normally start work at that hour!  le boyfriend picked me up and we had midnight dinner at sushi king.  they have awesome midnight specials!  my poor honey bunny had to get up at 4am to go to his job and stayed up to pick me up from mine (but at least he had time to download the destiny beta for ps4 while he was waiting for me, haha that sucker apparently takes hours to download).  we had curry specials and shared sashimi... so worth the wait!  then a romantic hilarious delirious [from sleep deprivation] car ride home in the battlewagon singing atlas genius and coheed and cambria at the top of our lungs along with the radio (thanks kpoi, the only station that plays music i recognize 90% of the time).
and that should be the end of the story to a fantastic summer day.
but no.
i could not stay asleep.
i attempted to sleep and managed a few hours... got up at 3am then dozed until 5am. then i gave up and watched tour de france (i've been following everyday since it started, i'll have to air my grievances in another post) until 7am, the hour i usually get off work.  then i slept until 11am (i know, terrible) and now have the meanest caffeine deprivation headache!  when i got up at 3 i should've had a cup of coffeeeeeeeee...
i'm working my regular schedule tonight hope my inner clock is back in synch.

and now for the friday 5!  answer for yourself or see others' answers here: http://f.riday5.com/?p=1042

i can just barely stomach them.
  2. How do you feel about carnival games?
the prizes don't compensate the difficulty.
  3. What’s your favorite carnival food?
    CARAMEL APPLES!
  4. Which animals do you look forward to seeing at the fair?
??? like, circus animals?  i suppose i'd like to see a tiger.  they look so huggable!
  5. How much does it cost to ride the bus in your city?
$60 for a month of unlimited rides!

OMNIVORE

friday5-ing!  i love vegetables!!  answer for yourself or see others' answers here: http://f.riday5.com/?p=1040

  1. What’s your favorite tomato thing?
PIZZA!  i love pizza.  i could eat it every day.  it has all the food groups in one dish.  and it's all about the sauce.  tomato sauce!
  2. What’s your favorite celery thing?
i like cooked celery (i like it raw too) .  i like to eat mire poix!  and i like chunks in stew or curry.  and diced in spaghetti sauce and minced in meatloaf.
    * side note, Swanson brand chicken broth has a stronger celery flavor than other brands.  good for making haole soups but makes wonton soup taste weird.
  3. What’s your favorite broccoli thing?
i like it plain!  just boiled or steamed.
    * side note, why didn't anyone ask about the broccoli cousin, cauliflower?  my favorite cauliflower thing is grilled cauliflower steak, something my pops made up for a vegan function he had to cook for.  so delicious!
  4. What’s your favorite eggplant thing?
mmmmmm i love the green thai curry at Bangkok Chef!
  5. What’s your favorite spinach thing?
i kind of love spinach in everything.  pasta, quiche, soup, salad, omelette...

JEUDI

Yesterday after work I went to a tissu foundations class at Samadhi!  No fancy drops or tricks just practicing good form and working on strength.  Everything looks more beautiful when you do it right. ;)  I feel like a kid in a candy shop, in their loft- they have lyra, static trap, silks, hammocks... and just watching others practice can take your breath away! Anyway, I'll be back next thursday if anyone wants to drop in a class with me!

I love that samadhi is such a convenient location; I biked to and from there.

Yes, a short ride, but every little bit counts! Fall is approaching so I'm trying to get in as much bicycle-ness as I can before I'm tied up at UH.

When I got home I had Samurai ice cake

Post ride cooooool down.

I forgot how much I like these. When was the last time you bought a box of ice cakes?  I highly recommend! (=゚ω゚)ノ
I also watched Groundhog Day and  for lunchdinnerwhatever made an epic sandwich from leftovers but since the rest of this post has been so mediocre I'll spare the details.

I'm working my way through Society of S right now.  The main character just made a pivotal revelation but I haven't gotten far enough in the story to judge the plot.  So far so good.

eat the salted peanuts out the can...

YEY!

i don't believe in #humblebrag (not intentional humble bragging, anyway) because it comes out sounding kind of snooty.  most of the time if you want to brag about an accomplishment there must be someone else who would want to celebrate with you anyway!  i'm going to regular brag in hopes that a minstrel will write a song of my conquests because the worse that could happen is people will ignore me and i'm perfectly fine with that because i've done something i've previously thought i could not do before!

wooohooo!  i biked up tantalus! . : * c o n f e t t i ! * : .  \ ( º u º    )/
the ipod GPS fucked it all up as usual but i have a witness, the great and infamous Sau.  Many thanks to the kind sir for patience and encouragement, and the fun post ride conversations!

today's video selection:

the vintage hold out performed with regular bikes (instead of vintage fan backs)

PS,
i finished heart shaped box.  thank you, Joe Hill, for the first time in many years (in 8 years, to be exact;  the first time i read 'Salem's Lot) i was actually scared reading this book!  i was at work (not alone, and not in the dark), on coffee break, waiting for AM rounds to start, and it was so quiet... too quiet... and i was reading the ouija part...
five star read, i highly recommend if you like ghost stories!

More tales from a life of leisure

// Written on Thursday July 3 //

Last night in blood bank was a paaaaain! I got a patient with no history but a positive DAT (IgG pos, complement neg). When questioned, turns out the patient was transfused before (several times before) at a different hospital.  When I called said hospital for more info, the BB tech there told me they had similar difficulties with the cross match and the patient was just transfused two weeks ago. :P. the consultation I sent out didn't get resulted before I left so I guess I'll find out if there are any underlying antibodies tonight.  I suspect just a weak warm auto since almost everything else could be ruled out with just one panel.

Anyway, I got home and relaxed with a cinnamon roll and coffee then took a nap.

Ate an açai bowl for lunch over Heart Shaped Box.  I'm halfway done with this novel. Joe Hill mentioned a "walking backwards man" ghost/phantom but didn't explain what he is.  I remember he was also mentioned in NOS4A2, I wonder what his story is?

Then I went to yoga and saw pyhiflygirl, Jaimie!  Second time this week! Great minds stretch alike, right? :)  I have a feeling I'll see her on Saturday too.

ACCORDING TO PLAN

// Written on Thursday June 26 //

Forget all that summer reading planning I did last month; I went to the library yesterday afternoon and brought home an armful of good reads!

Heart shaped box- I've been wanting to read this since I finished NOS4A2

An astronaut's guide to life on Earth- saw this at the book store, been waiting for it to show up at the library for a while!  When I saw it on the shelf, I jumped for it!

The mathematician, the apprentice and the football fan- passed this up last time I was at the library, don't know what it's about, exact.  Decided not to pass it up again.

The Society of S- just saw this on the shelf (when I went to find Heart Shaped Box) and the synopsis sounded interesting.

Enlightening Symbols- you know I love me some non fiction.  This was on the new book shelf!  I read the first couple pages and really enjoyed it.

Batman Inc. (TP)- I never followed this series in the new 52.  This is a good trade to pick up if you are curious about Bruce's new mission for Dick concerning Spyral!

Nightwing 30 mentions Spyral

Bend of the World- the synopsis sounded too weird to pass up.  The genre was listed as humor so I thought I'd give it a try.  I've made it through the first three chapters.  It reminds me of the movie From a Scanner Darkly.  So far so good.

And in case you are wondering, yep, I finished that octopus book.  If it wasn't obvious already, I love the ocean and I love octopus (and other Cephalopoda).  After reading this and learning about octopus intelligence, physical characteristics, personality, and the general enigma these animals are to scientists, I live them even more.  I want to adopt the octopus as my spirit animal!  We can do that, right?  Octopus are so cool, I don't think it would be a bad thing to be more like them.

Last weekend I had plans to meet up with the great and infamous Sau but those plans were nixed since he's training for a bicycle race this weekend.  Good luck to all racing at Cycle to the Sun this weekend at Haleakala!

On Tuesday I planned to go to yoga after 140 lab.  Instead I biked to ala moana

(Ala wai Mash PR yessssssss) and met le boyfriend.  We had gyros for linner (lunch-dinner) then had a Young Justice marathon. Then ended the night with homemade chocolate ice cream and Penny Dreadful.  "if that ain't love then i don't know what love is."
