2015

not a very photographic year since i was buckling down the homework for my last year of college.

Take that, old age!

Hi

and onwards to 2016!

BONS SONS 2015

things i heard and liked this year:

Silversun Pickups | Better Nature | Circadian Rhythm (Last Dance)

Warm Thoughts | Intangible (7" single) | Intangible

Koji | Fury | Breaking and Broken

Deafheaven | New Bermuda | Gifts for the Earth

Big Grams (Big Boi + Phantogram) | (S/T) LP | Fell in the Sun

and since we are talking about super groups and collaborations

Self Love (Self Defense Family + Touché Amoré) | Self Love | Low Beams

an old favorite making new music:

Metric | Pagans in Vegas | Other Side

a new band making new music:

The Winter Passing | A Different Space of Mind | Daisy

this band used to be called DMND:

Diamond Youth | Nothing Matters | Thought I had it Right

this video is NSFW.  the song is NSF my bedroom because i just wanna run around circle moshing  and destroy everything when i hear it:

Culture Abuse | Spray Paint the Dog | Perfect Light

i love how full this band sounds:

Anakin | Celestial Frequency Shifter | Artificial

a cinematic video:

Will Butler | Policy | Anna

you might be surprised, the original music video was just Will dancing:

Loma Prieta | Self Portrait | Nostalgia

heard this on the radio and had to have it:

Børns | Dopamine | Electric Love

when you're feeling chill:

Ghost Feet | Together Alone | Cursed Summer

when you're feeling defeated:

The Saddest Landscape | Darkness Forgives | Souls Worth Saving

Sorority Noise | Joy, Departed | Blissth

Death Cab For Cutie | Kintsugi | Black Sun

thanks to @valdezign for introducing me to this band:

Diarrhea Planet | Aliens in the Outfield | Peg Daddy

ok, this is sort of cheating.  this album was self released in 2014 but was re-released by robotic empire in 2015.  this song is too good to not include it!!

Tideland | Love Luster | Let Me In

this song also came out on No Sleep's Comp for Mom in 2014 but TA re-released it (just a few days ago!) as a B side to their "condolence" flexi (which i had to have).

Touché Amoré | Condolences flexi | Available (cover of The National)

pre-emptive love for this album.  it doesn't come out until 12/18/15.  but the single- i already have it stuck in my head a lot! these girls are so bad ass:

Drug Church | Hit Your Head | Bagged

maaaaaaaaang, 2015 was a DOPE year for music!
I'll probably think of more after i post this...

WORKING GIRLS RETREAT FROM THEIR HUM-DE-DUM

The weekend before thanksgiving, my kona gal, Em flew over for a visit!

^ this gal!  c. 2014 at a confernce when we studied viruses together.

^ c. 2014 that one time when we went to see my favorite band, touché amoré (photo by honolulupulse)

^ and that one time when we went to see her favorite band, jack white, c. 2015

on saturday we met up in the morning for yoga.  it was hard!  liz was subbing for dorian.  it was a very energetic practice- even for me who does yoga at least once a week (the next day was so hard to get out of bed!), but it was nice to mix up the routine.
we went to taste tea after class.  i had my usual, wintermelon with grass jelly and mini tapioca.  Em had blended honey dew with matcha jelly.  we talked about the state of dengue.  and dragging up for rocky horror picture show.  and traveling for work to guam.  and we swapped phlebotomy techniques.  and she brought me an octopus!!

my spirit animal!

on sunday we met up for breakfast with our other microbio friend, toby!  we went to fresh cafe (fck!) and talked about comic books (descender = yes) and snapchat (no, i don't).   after turkey pesto sandwiches and hot coffeeeeeee,

we went over to Jelly's to peruse the music of our youth.  i went home with some get up kids

and these two thursday CDs:

i already have "a city by the light divided":

(my favorite thursday!) so completing the trio made me happy.

i guess you can give me sparkly eye shadow and an adult job, but i'll always be an emo from the early 2000s at heart. ;D

i also picked up the Delerium CD, Chimera.  but i bought it specifically for Em because of the Emily Haines song on it, stopwatch hearts:

my pal will be back during christmas time, missing that gal already!

POCKET BREAD AND BAKED EGGS

on wednesday my mom wanted to stop by Shaloha to pick up some pita and hummus.  This is a shop on waialae near city mill, across the street from st. louis drive in, where the laundromat and subway is.

she had some of their hummus and pita at a farmers market and said it was soooooo good and we should get some!  i was pretty excited- mediterranean and middle east and indian foods are some of the things that i will always spend money on because i don't know how to make any of it myself.
the shop smelled really good and they gave a free sample of the pita.

i ate the hummus on my coffee break at work later... and was SEVERELY DISAPPOINTED.  it was absolutely bland.  even sabra grocery store corporate hummus tasted better than this.  man, i really want to support local businesses and i really tried to like it but i eating this hummus was like the equivalent to eating cold paste.  :(

maybe it was a bad batch?  they forgot salt? and garlic? and seasonings?!  maybe it wasn't mixed good?  maybe i should have got the hot sauce they offered and mixed it in?  maybe i've been eating bad hummus my whole life and this is how its supposed to taste?  i just don't know. :(

i will give them another chance... maybe it was a fluke.  and i will definitely try some of their plate lunches (i'm a sucker for falafel).  because the bright side of this purchase was definitely the pita!  it was light, not tough, and pillowy.  and it had a nice flavor.  i think it would be good with other foods!  if only i didn't have to eat it with the bland hummus at work. :(  i'll report back if i have something else from there.  i really want to like this place, hopefully this was just a bad batch.

as for the remainder of my hummus container, i think i'll doctor it myself with some garlic and lemon and togarashi shichimi.  doesn't that sound good?   yes, it needs all those things.  it was that bland. :(

speaking of home made food stuffs, i made quiche with @wild_twinkies on tuesday.  spinach, mushroom bacon quiche.  it was pretty good.

tiny cats!

if you want to try yourself, use A LOT of butter.  like, a whole stick of butter.  it stops the cheeeeeze from sticking to your frying pan.  sweat a diced onion in the butter and then add frozen spinach and bacon.  then add cheeeeze.  cheddar and feta.  when it's pretty melty, put it in a pie crust (we used a premade frozen one because we lazy) and add 2-4 beaten eggs.  put it in the oven for 15 min, top it off with a little more cheddar and lay sliced mushrooms on top.  bake 40 more minutes and... TA DA!  a quiche!  easy, cheeeeezey, and tastey.

today is friday the 13th.
are you feeling lucky?

i locked my bad luck up years ago:

man, i miss getting tattoos...

GUEST BLOGGER: MS. COFFEE SUNDAY- PRETTY PASSPORTS

HEY.  YOU!  ARE YOU TIRED OF MY RAMBLINGS?!
YOU MUST BE THINKING... "UGHHHH, ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE BLARGHS ABOUT YOGA AND FOOD AND SCREAMY MUSIC AND THE EVILS OF BIOCHEM!"
i mean, even i'm tired of me!  i tried to write a post about all the fun aerial things i did last saturday, but it all sounded like the last post and the last post and the last post...
instead, i present you with a guest blogger, Ms. Coffee Sunday!  she is a stylish motherfcker who knows her way around a make up store.  i always go to her for beauty advice.  i love how she mixes some fancy make ups with stuff you could also find in the drugstore.  i feel like... I CAN DO THIS!  after reading her posts. please check her blog for more wit and wisdom if you like this post.  :D

and if you'd like to be a guest blogger, comment here or contact me!  you know i'm all about octopus and bicycles and dead things and circus things and science things but really, you could write about whatever you want. :D

now, without further ado...

* * * * * * * * *

When Codi asked me to write a guest post, she left the subject totally up to me. So, I’ve decided to do something makeup-related, since that’s the focus of my blog, coffee sundays.(http://coffeesundays.com) A disclaimer if you do click over: I suck at updating regularly.

I recently made an international move, from Honolulu, Hawaii, to London, England. In addition to my passport, I also had to apply for a student visitor visa, since I’ll be staying here for six months, and taking a couple short professional courses to fill the time.

There are many things you need to consider when applying for a passport and/or a visa, but the one I’m going to discuss today is the picture, and how to do your makeup for it!

Now you might be thinking, why bother with makeup? Who cares? Well, maybe I’m vain (I am), but this is going to be an official picture ID for the next ten years! I want to look nice.

However, my goal isn’t to look like an ultra-glamourous bombshell (no offense intended if that's your personal jam. You do you). I just want to look like a better, more polished version of myself.

Case in point for the power of “no-makeup makeup”?

passport photo no makeup

passport photo with makeup

See? I still look like what’d I’d look like on any given day, but it's a more put together illusion. (Honestly, I’m usually a hot mess.)

Counterintuitively, I find that no-makeup makeup is actually just as challenging as glam makeup. The idea is to make it look like you’re not wearing anything, as if you actually #wokeuplikethis. Your goal is to convince people that you don’t need makeup… with makeup.

passport photo base makeup

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer

I started with a primer, to ensure that the foundation applies evenly. I rarely remember to use a primer, but everyone seems to like this one. I like that this one doesn't feel super silicone-y, the way that most primers do.

Rouge Bunny Rouge Milk Aquarelle liquid foundation mixed with LUSH Feeling Younger Skin Tint

foundation with liquid highlighter

This particular foundation gives a rather flat look to my face. To counteract this, I mix a little bit of LUSH's Feeling Younger Skin Tint, a liquid highlighter. It's very lightweight, almost like lotion. It imparts a subtle sheen that brings life back to the skin.

Pixi Peach Corrector

I use this on my dark circles. The peachy color cancels out my purple tones.

BECCA Dual Coverage concealer

I use the medium coverage side under my eyes, and the extra coverage side on my spots.

Rouge Bunny Rouge Flawless Face Powder

Light dusting of this all over to set the foundation.

Rouge Bunny Rouge Impalpable Finishing Powder - Diaphanous

This goes on at the very end, after blush, etc. I know it seems like overkill, but this powder blurs fine lines and pores beautifully, and I really only use it when I know I'm going to be photographed.

passport photo color makeup

Now, onto color that looks like I'm a naturally healthy, radiant human being!

Shiro Cosmetics Burn the Heart Out of You

I use this as a contour powder. It's tricky to work with a loose powder, especially for something that's supposed to be undetectable like contouring. It's a great color, though. When looking for a contour powder (or cream), keep in mind that you want to mimic shadows, as if your cheekbones are so damn chiseled, they could provide shade for someone on a hot summer's day. So look for cool colors, with some gray mixed in.

Wet n Wild ColorIcon bronzer in Reserve Your Cabana

I have no idea why they call this a bronzer. I use it as a highlight, and I'm quite pale. The finish is satin, and subtle, not frosty or metallic.

Korres Zea Mays blush in Natural

I didn't open the compact for the picture, but it's a peachy brown color with a bit of golden warmth. In all honesty, I'm not entirely convinced I even like this blush, but it's called Natural so…? In hindsight, I should have used something with a bit more color, because the tiny ass passport photo gets washed out and shitty anyway.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade in Medium Brown

I actually have naturally dark brows. But for pictures, they look 100% better when they're filled in. My whole face seems to snap into focus.

Smashbox eyeshadows

I always come back to this trio when I want a natural eye (which you can't even see in the picture because I have hooded lids, so never mind).

Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner in Demolition

For softer, natural makeup, I prefer a dark brown eyeliner over black.

Urban Decay Subversion mascara primer, The Body Shop Divide and Multiply mascara, Urban Decay Perversion mascara

I went all out with my mascara for my passport photo. I have super puny lashes, and they need all the help they can get. Mascara primer, and two different mascaras! Please say you can see the difference. Don't let my hard work be for naught.

Jouer lip gloss

No idea what this lip gloss is called. It's a sheer flesh color, with golden shimmer.

So! Once your makeup is done, you can head to Costco or wherever they do passport photos. Or, if you're a bit of a control freak, you can take your own picture at home and upload it to ePassportphoto.com, which is what I did. They give you tips on how to take an acceptable photo (white background, no hair in your face, cropped to the shoulders, etc.), and they'll even print it according to which country you need the photo for. US passport size is different from the UK passport size!

Fun fact: I stressed out so much over whether or not my photo would be acceptable. When I went to my biometrics appointment as part of the visa application, they took a photo of me there (I had my makeup done very similar to what I did here). When my visa was approved and my passport sent back to me, I saw that they didn’t even use the picture I sent in, but the one that was taken at the visa center! So now you're the only ones who get to see all my hard work. You're welcome.

禮拜六

my typical saturday...

9:30 yoga!

dorian just got back from a hatha teacher training in india.  he was very energetic!  we did a lot of things i've never done in his- or any other- yoga class before; several partner adjustments and things against the wall.  it was... challenging!  lots of hip openers.  i can tell it was good practice, though, because i have never been able to do a very good mandukasana (frog pose).  but in that class, i was able to get a nice spider pose against the wall, and a pretty nice center split against the wall.  i forsee a better mandukasana in my future. :)  also, i am not really into partner yoga (i'm so embarrassed people have to touch me when i'm sweating buckets) but the lady who partnered with me cracked my upper/mid back and it was AMAZINGGGGGG.   now i can see why people like getting massages!  i've never had a massage, myself, but one day i'd like to try.

walked across the street and had lunch at nijiya market after that.

$6 chirashi bowl, so goooood!  usually, i get tea (at taste tea) after yoga but i was... hungry.  this was so tasty, i might make nijiya part of my regular saturday routine. :9   kani, ikura, ahi, shiso, ginger, rice.  can a gal ask for more?!  also, you can eat inside the grocery store where it's air conditioned!  super like the air conditioning after yoga. ;)

went to catch the bus at ala moana but first, stopped at the post office to pick up the new peanuts stamps for my mom.  the ice skating one is my favorite.

eating sakura mochi at the bus stop.

i'm like fat fuu, can't help it!  love to eat!

i like to hang out outside when i get home.  absorb some sunlight and enjoy the breeze.

hello hamstrings!  since i'm all stretched out from the morning yoga, i can do all kinds of amazing things in the afternoon.  it's that perfect hour when you've recovered enough from the morning but are still bendy.  by sunday morning i'm too achy to do crazy cool yoga poses!

video

after that i rinse all the sweat out of my mat.  because i am a microbiologist.  and i know what normal flora is.

and then i shower myself off.
and then laundry.

and then homework.  and guava toast (with spreadcheese). and coffee.
this is why i need to exercise #alwayseating

and then bed time!   i know... only 7:30pm.  but it's late for me!

off to work at 11pm.

i'm a hematologist, and this is my new baby, sysmex xn!

i'm also in charge of blood banking when there's only two techs on

yeah, i'm ballin, keeping an AB platelet in stock.

when i'm at work, i'm all about the socks.

i get off work at 7am.
then i get home at shower off the hospital germs.  because i'm a microbiologist. ;)
(if i had a home incinerator and could burn my clothes like in gattaca...)

on sundays i hide out in my room after work... (#fuckyeahblackoutcurtains)
i drink coffee and play records while i take my computer down and back up all my hard drives.

We are still here laughing with injuries

and then finally another short and blissful nap until the sun crawls out and even my dark curtains can't stop me from seizing the day.

and that's what my weekends are like.
