have you listened to Balance and Composure's new album yet?!
i just bought it on itunes and it's really good.
it seems like with every album the sound changes a little, but it's still so THEM.
Light We Made is a little less screamy-punk and more melodic-electronic. but still moody. and i mean this in a good way! they sound so cool and polished now.
i liken it to the evolution of thrice. i remember when Paper Tigers came out and feeling like destroying the world...
"light the world on fire, just to watch it burn!"
and then some years pass and they release the alchemy indexes with the song Digital Sea...
"i'm drowning in a digital sea... my voice goes to ones and zeroes..."
they're both excellent songs but so different!
maybe it's my mood (why do i always get the blues in october?) but lately i lean toward the sleepy-dreamy sound of digital sea. my other favorite from that album is, of course, Night Diving.
doesn't it sound exactly like the title? :)
it makes me think about the movie GATTACA, for some reason. maybe because there was a night time swimming scene. this might be my favorite thrice song (it's a toss up between Night Diving or Artist in the Ambulance). it's such a good tune that on all the terminals at work, i have a personal color scheme that i call "night diving" because it reminds me of this song (also the dark teal color is easy on the eyes and i can immediately tell if someone didn't log into their own remote desktop because everyone else has black with white font as default colors).
so after that side story...
is it any surprise my favorite song from the new B&C album is Midnight Zone?
"in the ocean further down we go, i don't want to know your motive"
so sweet and hypnotic compared to some earlier work like Quake:
"shakes you up a bit"
Light We Made still sounds like B&C but it's a slightly different version of them. the other songs i've been playing a lot from this album are Spinning
(especially love the chorus!)
("this kool-aid tastes weird" kind of video.)
i think my all time favorite B&C song is Reflection, from their second album:
guhhhhhh... the intro is SO GOOD.
i have an itunes library of 6000+ songs and keep it sorted by play count. Reflection is in my top 50 songs (#34). IT'S THAT GOOD. i get it stuck in my head all the time! (in comparison, night diving is #169, and at the time of writing this, the entire library is 6780 songs)
watching the video now, it's kind of eerie after hearing what happened to the band between albums. two car crashes in their tour van, in almost the same spot! here's the article: http://www.ew.com/article/2016/09/19/balance-composure-van-accident-light-we-made
if you want to know a little more about the band, i love the "small talk" series by Run for Cover records:
