COMIC RELIEF

in case you are wondering, these are my current subscriptions at Other Realms:

Hellblazer (i ♥ bad boys)
Nightwing (i ♥ chatty circus boys)
Batman (obligatory!)
Justice League (also obligatory)
Descender (water colors)
Saga (so creative, it blows my mind)

subscriptions i cancelled:

Midnighter
Green Lantern

series i want to read but haven't yet:

Girl over Paris
Monstress
[the new one where superman is chinese]
Cowboy Ninja Viking
Dr. Fate
Superman: American Alien
[whatever riley rossmo is working on? damn, i love his art!]

confessions:

i barely understand the plot and purpose of spyral.  i read the Batman, inc trade and all of the Grayson series and i still barely understand what is going on.  thank goodness the organization is dead, helena is going back to birds of prey, and dick is going back to nightwing.  i don't have to pretend to like it anymore.  or wait a minute... i just realized... not understanding spyral... maybe the TSUCHIGUMO actually worked on me! *mind blown*

i never read any superman or wonder woman comics. i've gone through a lot of flash (mostly wally, but also some barry and a little of jay from jsa), new 52 aquaman, and blackest day green lantern.  but i've never read any superman/action comics or wonder woman.  i only know their tales through justice league and batman interactions.

trades that i lent to friends:

thomas has my Brightest Day Vol I.
ken has my Batman: Dark Victory

basically, if i lent you a book and you haven't returned it in a year, i've probably given up hope i'll get it back (bsg captain adama got it right- books are basically gifts).  but i will always remember you have it and will gladly accept the return.

trades that i want to buy:

Batman Hush
Madame Xanadu

some other non-DC comics that i read, loved, and now recommend:

Fatale
Criminal (not to be confused with Incognito, which i liked less)
The Authority (is this still a thing?)
Y: The Last Man

XX

i recently read this article in wired magazine: In a Perpetual Present- the strange case of a woman who couldn't remember her past and can't imagine her future. http://www.wired.com/2016/04/susie-mckinnon-autobiographical-memory-sdam/ (great accompanying art/photos, by the way)

it's a fascinating condition that is described as just knowing past things as facts, but not knowing how they made you feel because you can't remember it happened to you.

well, i had to do a quick brain inventory to see if the same was true to me.  luckily i have a normal memory by the article's standards.  i get pretty excited (emotional) about music and i immediately thought about how when i saw metric in concert i was crying my eyes out during their last song from happiness.  but i wanted to think of an older, specific memory and pulled out from my mental filing cabinet...

2010

i was doing clinical rotations at DLS Queens in hematology.  they have a clock radio on the bench and the DJs are interviewing Daniel Dae Kim.  i can't recall if he was here for LOST or HI50 (i'm almost sure it was for LOST).  the DJs were finishing up the interview by asking what he was listening to lately and he said to check out The XX.  the DJs had never heard of the band so he said their album cover was just one big X.  I had heard of the band because they were being promoted in sxsw but had never stopped to listen to any songs.  the DJs promised to find some music by the XX and play it for the listeners... and they did!  they conjurred up the song Basic Space and it was good!  i've been listening to the band ever since.  such simple and poetic songs and the vocal harmonies are sweet.  Thanks you, Daniel Dae Kim for making me finally listen to the XX.

here are some XX recommendations for you:

i've been thinking about all of these memories the last few days (so meta) and naturally my train of thought led to... http://lookbook.nu/look/8316363-Daydreamer-La-Blue-Box-Lululemon-Minimalist

ok, i splurged and went back and bought that leotard, i couldn't resist!  but it fits so good... i'm going to wear it to aerial every week.  WORTH IT.

i was thinking what to call this look and it was so obvious with all the Xs in the back...

5 IN 7

things that made me happy in july

1. STAIRCASE STUDIES
by alix becle

opium is going to be my new go to flourish this summer.  so simple and hypnotic!

2. TEGADERM

i was super busted up in the last week of june.  like, le boyfriend took one look at me and was like, WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU?! i had a lovely bruise on my thigh (of course, right were my shorts end so it was not easy to cover up) and bruises on the back of both knees.  i pulled my right shoulder so i couldn't lift my arm much.  and the grand finale, gnarly fabric burns all across my lower back.

all this is from aerial class of course.  the knee bruises are from backpack drop (i can do this on hammock too!).  the shoulder pull is from conditioning on trapeeze.  the thigh bruise is from "dancer pose" which i hereby christen "ultra wedgie leg tourniquet pose".  the fabric burns are from angel drop.  angel drop is my new favorite!  it's easy and looks really elegant because you come down inverted.  any way, i wasn't wearing skin-tight clothes when i learned it (just a regular tshirt) and the sliding fabric just destroyed me.

i had a week off to recover and then i missed class too much so i slapped on some tegaderm and hit the ropes (literally!).  yes, i am a crazy person.

3. LEOTARD
i also learned my lesson and bought a leotard for class.  i wasn't even sure where they have adult sized leotards but i found one and it is fantastic.
if you are looking for one try: http://www.discountdance.com
if you feel like splurging, there is a lululemon one that i tried on at the ala moana store and it fits like a dream!  if only the back was a little bit higher for more coverage in drops.

4. IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA
i'm bingewatching.  i started last month from season 1 and i'm up to season 8.  so many good lines!  Dr. Mantis Tobogan MD, jabroni, cultivating mass... sometimes at work i get the "dayman" song stuck in my head which is totally inappropriate.  XD

^ HELLO COME RIGHT IN!

5. ROLLER GIRLS
moxi shop finally has a new video this month from refinery 29!

i want to try skating in a skate park so bad but i'm too embarassed.  also, i haven't owned knee pads since i was 12 or something.

SEEING SOUND

i was really, really close to dropping everything and getting on a plane for wrecking ball in ATL.  i mean, just look at the line up: http://wreckingballatl.com
deafheaven, sorority noise, touché amoré, ceremony, diarrhea planet, drug church, wild honey, cold cave, bayside, hey mercedes (reunited!!) joy formidable, piebald (also reunited!)... and that's just the first day!  the second day has culture abuse, thursday (!!!!! reunited!), tigers jaw, dinosaur jr, amerian football... i could go on...

alas, i couldn't get all the details together in time so looks like i'm staying on this rock for awhile.  but as a consolation, some bands i WILL be seeing this year:

silversun pickups
(it's the same week as wrecking ball, so i'm not so bummed out)
aug 11th at the republik

motion city soundtrack
(omg, the farewell tour!!)
sept 4th at the republik

earth, wind, and fire
(will be my 3rd time seeing them live, i can't believe my parents went without me last time!)
sept 27th at the NBC

^ i don't think this is one of their more popular songs, like september or fantasy but i really like the horns in this song.

i actually got my shit together and have the tickets so i won't miss out this time. hope to see you in the mosh pits! (well, except at EW&F.  they frown upon moshing at the blaisdell.)

grouplove is also coming.  they play the day before sspu and i'm considering getting tickets for them too.  i only know two of their songs- but they are really good, fun, dancey songs so... ?

^ actually, this is one of my all time favorite music videos

i also heard on the radio that elle king is coming.  my mom really likes her music so i was thinking about getting tickets for her birthday.  the thing is... she's never been to a concert at the republik and i don't know how she'd like standing up all night...

^ "since i'm going to go to hell anyway!"
