FANGTASTIC

halloween is almost upon us so i thought i'd share some good vampire movies... since i'm something of a vampire, myself.

Let Me In

it's so good!  it's a movie about friendship and bullies and devotion... with all the normal vampire tropes affirmed.  my favorite scene is the guy-hiding-in-the-back-seat-scene.  really gets your heart beating, cheering for the bad guy!
also, the music is good (they don't write em like that anymore ♫ ).

this movie is a remake of a swedish film (which is based on a book)

What We Do In The Shadows

a mockumentary about [centuries old] vampires making their lives and making new friends in modern day new zealand.  SO FUNNY.  i especially love the old photographs that happen to look like the vampire subjects... really helps to cement this in reality.  also, the music is good... because it's so wacky!  it matches the tone of this film perfectly (and i wouldn't have expected any less from flight of the conchords).

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night

ahhhhhh... i can't believe i didn't think of this before! it's so obvious that the burqa is a perfect disguise for a vampire!  it's such a pulpy movie, you can't call it a horror movie.  it's in black and white, which i like (i think colors would be too distracting), but it's not exactly a noir.  it's just... it's own genre.  also, the music is good (if you like post punk, goth, no wave...)

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter

this doesn't really make my "favorites list" but i like this as the alternate history time line.  totally unbelievable movie, with totally plausible events.  i motion that a person is not fit to be president if they cannot match their intellectual prowess with physical ability.  how great would that be?  obama would totally win in fisticuffs against other world leaders, amirite?  i don't want a president who can't out run possible threats (such as bad guys with knives, kaiju, vampires, other world leaders).  but i digress.  my point is, Lincoln = brains + brawn

'Salem's Lot

i've only seen the 2004 version, i haven't seen the original '79.  i love the mansion.  i love the PAINT IT BLACK cover song on the credits.  to be honest, i like this because i like the book.  i've read the book about a dozen times, even though it's the first book to ever scare me (if you see your dead friend at the window, don't invite them in).  i like that everything goes to shit in a matter of days when you live in a small town (and oahu is a speck, on the globe).  i like the doctor named Cody (he died a human, he never turned!).  strongly advise reading the book at least once in your life!  (especially if you plan on getting into the DARK TOWER in the future).

tell me your favorite vampire films in the comments, i will watch all of them (if they are available at the library)!

A RECORD MONTH

at the beginning of october i went to the annual record fair!

LAST YEAR i bought such goodies as these:

#hrf2015 haul

here's a post about my finds that day: http://liquoriceblack.blogspot.com/2015/08/hrf2015.html

THIS YEAR, i was specifically looking for that Tycho album i passed up last year (SO MUCH REGRETSSSSSS) and the doors, among other things.  i already have the 7" single of light my fire but i really wanted the long version (i think it's like 6 minutes long and they don't play it on the radio that often) and i was pretty hopeful i'd find it here.

here's what i ended up getting:

Accident prone

Yes, the doors i was looking for!  it also contains the Alabama (Whiskey) Song as well as Break on Through (To the Other Side) so i'm pretty happy about that.  I also got a b/o The Zombies.  I was looking for a 7" of Time of the Season but this LP has it PLUS She's Not There AND Summertime.  so, YEY!  also picked up a Devo single.  i love getting 7".  it's like here's that one song you know and love... and a little something-something on the B side you might like. *wink

no, i never saw that Tycho album again.  nor did i find anything else on my wish list (i am so desperate for a copy of Modest Mouse, Good News for People Who Like Bad News).

my budddddy emmmmmily was in kona and she asked me to keep some eyeballs open for some albums:

which i also didn't find. :(

but it was a fun day anyway!

so after that weekend, i decided i hit my quota and should not be going crazy over records... but then i heard Hungry Ear is closing! U___U
they are going to build a condo on the university ave property and the record shop is getting the boot october 31st. so sad!  they have an announcement on their facebook and website, please read: http://hungryear.com

consequently, they are having a huge moving sale... and i just thought it's the right the thing to do...

and i found TREASURES!

Accident prone

JAWBREAKER. are you kidding me?!  this album has been on my wishlist for so long (i even see it mentioned on the HRF15 post!) i never thought i'd find it.  and lo!  when i least expected!  so i had to get that, of course.

and then i saw the album emily wanted me to look for!!! so i had to pick this up as well, in case i never see it again!

flipping through the 7" stacks, i found a beloved oldie  (sing with me, guys, "ooooh... ahhhh... precious moments...") and this cool jack white single, Black Bat Licorice.

3 and 3

to be honest, i don't know many songs besides the white stripes standards, but i went to his concert WITH EMILY and they played this song!  and you know how i feel about licorice. and bats. i felt like the kismet was too strong, i had to get this too.

and the cherry on top?
i have a thing for dead wax messages.  so i was very pleased to see this records says (A) bankhead or banquette (B) bad hectare
SWEET. :D

one day i will share all the dead wax messages i have... i think i've collected five or six so far.

special thanks to le boyfriend who has no interest in collecting records and listens only to radio top 40 alt rock.  he came along and waited patiently while i methodically flipped through the crates with a ritalin-like focus.

as you can see, it's been a  spectacular month for this vinyl junkie.  if you need me i'll be in my room cranking up the speakers. ♥♫

SLACK LINE TO MY HEART

before we get too far away from september...

last month when i went to see motion city soundtrack (see here: http://liquoriceblack.blogspot.com/2016/09/commit-this-to-memory.html ) the opening band was a local group called Earl Grey.

Earl Grey

after the show i immediately downloaded all their music from bandcamp.
https://earlgreyhi.bandcamp.com
they are currently my favorite local band!

i really like their song HANG TIMES

and LAVENDER

if you like Basement

or sunny day real estate

or sorority noise

etc... (you know the scene)

you will love these guys.

LET THE WORLD KEEP SPINNING ON A STREAM

HOLY FFFFFFFFF YOU GUYS.
have you listened to Balance and Composure's new album yet?!

http://lightwemade.com

i just bought it on itunes and it's really good.
REALLY GOOD.
it seems like with every album the sound changes a little, but it's still so THEM.
Light We Made is a little less screamy-punk and more melodic-electronic.  but still moody.  and i mean this in a good way!  they sound so cool and polished now.
i liken it to the evolution of thrice.  i remember when Paper Tigers came out and feeling like destroying the world...

"light the world on fire, just to watch it burn!"

and then some years pass and they release the alchemy indexes with the song Digital Sea...

"i'm drowning in a digital sea... my voice goes to ones and zeroes..."

they're both excellent songs but so different!
maybe it's my mood (why do i always get the blues in october?) but lately i lean toward the sleepy-dreamy sound of digital sea.  my other favorite from that album is, of course, Night Diving.

doesn't it sound exactly like the title?  :)
it makes me think about the movie GATTACA, for some reason.  maybe because there was a night time swimming scene. this might be my favorite thrice song (it's a toss up between Night Diving or Artist in the Ambulance).  it's such a good tune that on all the terminals at work, i have a personal color scheme that i call "night diving" because it reminds me of this song (also the dark teal color is easy on the eyes and i can immediately tell if someone didn't log into their own remote desktop because everyone else has black with white font as default colors).

so after that side story...
is it any surprise my favorite song from the new B&C album is Midnight Zone?

"in the ocean further down we go, i don't want to know your motive"

so sweet and hypnotic compared to some earlier work like Quake:

"shakes you up a bit"

(pun intended)
Light We Made still sounds like B&C but it's a slightly different version of them.  the other songs i've been playing a lot from this album are Spinning

(especially love the chorus!)

and Afterparty

("this kool-aid tastes weird" kind of video.)

i think my all time favorite B&C song is Reflection, from their second album:

guhhhhhh... the intro is SO GOOD.
i have an itunes library of 6000+ songs and keep it sorted by play count.  Reflection is in my top 50 songs (#34).  IT'S THAT GOOD. i get it stuck in my head all the time! (in comparison, night diving is #169, and at the time of writing this, the entire library is 6780 songs)
watching the video now, it's kind of eerie after hearing what happened to the band between albums.  two car crashes in their tour van, in almost the same spot! here's the article: http://www.ew.com/article/2016/09/19/balance-composure-van-accident-light-we-made

if you want to know a little more about the band, i love the "small talk" series by Run for Cover records:

NOVEMBER

just an fyi guys,
prince hotel is not having turkeys-to-go this year (due to renovations, and stuff).
but they will be open for dinner reservations.
and new for this year, brunch!  maybe you are going to hit black friday sales and need to take an evening nap before heading out?  well, you can get the thanksgiving feast a little earlier!
and if you insist on having turkey in your own house on thanksgiving...

get off your lazy ass and make it yourself! :U

here, i'll even give you some video instructions from revered canadian, matty matheson:

i love his videos.  he makes everything in a home kitchen so you know it's doable in your own kitchen.  but, he doesn't skimp on details (like checking the internal temperature of fried chicken because we don't need no salmonella).

and here's a bonus video about thanksgiving.  because everybody needs friends on thanksgiving.

and how to make megwin's turkey (so much energy):
